Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:Panel Discussion “Life of ‘Sea Gypsies’ along the Shoreline of Andaman Sea of Southern Thailand” (in Thai)
DESCRIPTION:The generic terms “sea gypsies” or “people of the sea” apply to a number of populations that live off the seas along the coastlines of Southeast Asia for hundreds of years. Their customary roving existence\, is threatened by the rapid socio-economic and cultural changes around them. \nOn 19 September 2019 at 6:00 pm\, SEA Junction will hold a panel discussion on the three sea nomadic groups living along the Andaman coastal provinces of Thailand\, namely the Moken\, Moglen\, and Urak Lawoi scattered over the islands. In particular\, the focus will be on the Moken\, a population of 1000 people living in the areas of Ranong\, Pang-nga and Phuket. Normally\, they would make temporary settlements during the monsoon season\, but the government is trying to move them to more permanent arrangements compelling them to adjust their daily habits. The deterioration of the environment and\, ironically\, also the measures taken to protect it through for instance marine parks in areas where they used to live restrict their livelihoods options.
