DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:Exhibition “Sex Work is OUR Work” by Jittrapon Kaicome
DESCRIPTION:Prostitution is prevalent in every country in the world. Despite being extensively publicized in academic papers\, documentaries\, opinions or other media platforms\, only few people realize about the lives of sex workers. Women who do sex work live and work on top of a mountain of social stigma and punitive laws. Laws which offer protections and benefits are withheld and sex workers are left to fend for themselves. The criminal law too often becomes a tool for corrupted officials to extort money and for employers to overlook the labor standards. \nTo highlight the right protection among sex workers in Southeast Asia\, the Empower Foundation in collaboration with SEA Junction will hold a photo exhibition “Sex Work is OUR Work” on 5 – 17 November\, from 11 am to 7 pm in the corner space 1st Fl of BACC. The exhibition focuses on” Can Do Bar”\, an entertainment venue owned and managed by a group of sex workers from Empower in Chiang Mai and on the lives of the Bar’s employees. \nThe opening of the exhibition on 5 November at 6 pm will consist of the screening of a short film made by sex workers on sex workers in Thailand entitled “Last Rescue in Siam” followed by a panel discussion on the exhibition’s topic. \nExhibition Opening Agenda on 5 November 2019\, 6 pm – 8 pm \n\nWelcoming Remarks\nRosalia Sciortino\, Director SEA Junction and Associate Professor IPSR\, Mahidol University\nFilm Screening – Last Rescue in Siam by Empower Foundation\nPanel Discussion\nLiz Hilton\, Member of Empower Foundation\nThanta Laovilawayakul\, Coordinator and sex worker’s leader of Empower Foundation\nLeo Villar\, Independent Consultant\nAnna Olsen\, Technical Specialist\, ILO\nOfficial opening on 1stFloor by photographer Jittrapon Kaicome\n\nThe exhibition and the panel discussion provide a unique opportunity to hear from and engage with the lived realities of sex work. Though no longer working\, she remains a core member of Empower and be part of the sex worker community. \nThanta Laovilawayakul \nThanta or better-known as Ping Pong is a sex worker leader and coordinator of Empower Foundation. With her over 20 years at Empower\, she values for her health knowledge and performance skills. \nLeo Villar \nLeo is an independent consultant based in Bangkok. He has worked with several civil society organizations and UN agencies on issues including gender equality\, women empowerment\, migration\, sex work\, LGBTIQ+ rights and HIV/AIDS. He co-authored with Oliver Fisher and Anna Olsen the chapter on Working Conditions for Migrants in Thailand’s Sex Industry in the Thailand Migration Report 2019 of the United Nations Thematic Working Group on Migration in Thailand\, edited by Benjamin Harkins. \nAnna Olsen \nAnna is the Technical Specialist with Tripartite Action to Enhance the Contribution of Labour Migration to Growth and Development in ASEAN project. SUMMARY:2020 Asia Pacific Leadership Program Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:The East-West Center is pleased to accept applications for the 2020 Asia Pacific Leadership Program Fellowship (APLP)\, June 21-November 16\, 2020. The APLP is the center of excellence for leadership education in the Asia Pacific region and a signature program of the East West Center. Applications are due by November 15\, 2019. Please see below for details. \nCurrently celebrating its 20th anniversary\, the APLP has created a network of 653 dynamic leaders in 45 countries who are helping to build a peaceful\, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community. \nProgram Description and Requirements \nThe Asia Pacific Leadership Program is Experiential\, Relational\, Transformative\, Optimistic\, and Impact-oriented. \nEach year\, approximately 25 Fellows are selected  to participate in the APLP and join a highly diverse\, active community. Cohorts typically have representation from over 18 countries and from every type of academic and professional background (as examples: science\, business\, development\, politics\, government\, civil society\, medicine\, religious orders\, art\, finance\, academia or research).  The age of participants ranges from mid 20s to mid 40s with an average of 32 years old. There are no citizenship\, age\, or ethnicity restrictions \nEligibility Requirements \n\nA demonstrated commitment to promoting peace and prosperity in the Indo-Asia Pacific region through professional work\, study or living experience\nAt least 5 years of work experience\nBachelor’s degree – applicants must have at least a 3-year bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from an accredited U.S. College or University or from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad.\nThere are no citizenship\, age\, or ethnicity restrictions.\n\nDesirable Qualifications \n\nLeadership track record in professional\, public\, and/or personal realms\nWillingness to engage fully in experiential leadership development training\nDeep involvement in a specific organization\, business or community impact initiative (applicants must explain how\, with their home-setting teams\, they will experiment with the leadership strategies learned in APLP)\nInternational experience and aptitude\, including overseas residence\, language skills\, intercultural and diversity exposure\nExperience of cohort learning\, working collaboratively in small teams or in large groups.\n\nWhat is the APLP Experience and its time commitment? \nLeaders who can successfully navigate change require creative vision and  the capacity to chart and act upon that vision. The APLP experience is designed to yield just these sorts of outcomes. Embracing and leading change takes time. The APLP is designed as a 5 month blended program in order to maximize the depth and breadth of learning. The program grows from building an introductory base in Honolulu\, Hawaii to applied place-based leadership activities in home settings to a final workshop and event with alumni in Asia. Each phase of the program has a distinct purpose and connection to the whole. The APLP experience is first and foremost about change. \nTogether we engage critical processes of change affecting the region now and in the future. By stepping out of specific individual areas of expertise (for example by discipline or country) and developing new analytic and leadership approaches participants come to have changed perspectives.
