DESCRIPTION:The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy is pleased to announce the opportunity to compete for 2018-2019 Fulbright Student Fellowships for graduate study in the United States leading to a Master’s or Doctoral degree. Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to qualified candidates under the auspices of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Program\, subject to the availability of funding. \nDeadline: June 1\, 2017\nThe Fulbright Program was established in 1946 by the U.S. Congress as a means “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” For more than sixty years the Fulbright Program has provided opportunities for foreign nationals to study\, teach\, and pursue research in the U.S.\nTo be eligible\, applicants must: \n\nHave a strong academic background and a record of excellence in previous studies;\nHave completed a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Master’s degree program\, or have a Master’s degree from a recognized college or university for those applying to study in the U.S. for a Doctoral program;\nBe proficient in English (a minimum score of 570 on TOEFL or TOEFL ITP\, or 230 on computer-based TOEFL\, or 88 on internet based TOEFL\, or 7.0 on IELTS);\nDemonstrate the ability to adapt readily to a foreign environment;\nBe in good health and able to undergo a rigorous study program; and\nNot have extensive experience living or studying in the United States.\n\nFulbright Student Fellowship grants provide round-trip transportation to the United States\, as well as tuition fees\, and living expenses for full-time graduate study. SUMMARY:5th Event of the “The Rice of Southeast Asia” Series: Photo Exhibition “Rice Terraces in the Greater Mekong Sub-region” by Giuseppe di Mauro
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of the centrality of rice in Southeast Asian culture\, in 2017 SEA Junction in collaboration with Asiatopia launched the series the “Rice of Southeast Asia”. The series aimed to explore the various dimensions of rice\, from mythology and culture to science and agriculture through lectures\, exhibitions and other events. \nThe 5th event to the series will be a solo photo exhibition on the “Rice Terraces of the Greater Mekong Sub-region” by photographer Giuseppe Di Mauro\, which will find place on 3-15 December\, from 11 AM to 7 PM in the Corner Space of BACC. The exhibition portrays the changes of rice terraces in the region from soil preparation to harvest drying\, highlighting the types of land destined for paddies\, both flat and mountainous. In particular\, the exhibited photos will showcase six moments in the natural cycle of rice\, namely when the rice fields are flooded for preparation\, moments of sowing\, the green paddies phase of growing plantation\, the yellow paddies phase of rice maturation\, the harvest moments and finally the drying methods.     \nThe photos were taken between 2010 and 2017 in the Greater Mekong Subregion by camera Nikon D90/ DX7200 \nAbout the Photographer \nGiuseppe Di Mauro is an Italian photographer who lives in Bangkok and travels widely in the region and beyond. He has developed and organized various ethnographic exhibitions dedicated to a variety of geo-cultural areas in Asia\, Africa\, Middle East and South America) with a mix of photographs and arts collections. SUMMARY:The Southeast Asian Conference on Education (SEACE)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Singapore for SEACE2020! \nFebruary 7–9\, 2020 | MAX Atria at Singapore EXPO\, Singapore \nWelcome to the inaugural Southeast Asian Conference on Education (SEACE2020)\, held in partnership with Singapore Management University (SMU)\, and the IAFOR Research Centre at the Osaka School of International Public Policy (OSIPP) at Osaka University. \nThe education scene in Southeast Asia is one of the most dynamic\, entrepreneurial and competitive in the world\, with more than 12 million students enrolled in around 7\,000 higher education institutions across the region\, reflecting the ASEAN’s growth in relevance and weight in the global economy and politics. The fast growing middle-class propels the inherently diverse ASEAN Community to set educational standards for the relatively youthful and growing population that are globally competitive and yet locally grounded\, as can be witnessed by the achievements of the universities in Singapore. While Singapore is often spoken as an exception\, it nevertheless is an integral part of the ASEAN’s goal to establish a “common space for higher education” and efforts to promote trans-national education to enhance human resource development that foster greater economic\, social and political integration among the 10 diverse nations. To this end\, the case of Singapore is also a reminder that raising the standard and quality of education in poorer members of ASEAN is still a real challenge that must be addressed collectively. The goals and aspirations for education in ASEAN may be clear but the environment is complex\, as national institutions must compete with global competitors from outside ASEAN\, such as US\, UK and Australian universities that have been long been popular destinations for Southeast Asian students to study abroad. The trend of overseas universities establishing campuses in ASEAN countries\, and the fast-changing educational requirements\, skills and qualifications compound the situation with additional hurdles. \nThe first IAFOR Southeast Asian Conference on Education seeks to identify the challenges and highlight the strength in the way ASEAN countries address and tackle the region’s educational needs\, at both the national level and at the region-wide level\, such as internationalisation\, multiculturalism\, connectivity\, mobility and accessibility. What are the challenges of reforming national-level primary and secondary education system conducive to enhancing trans-national education within ASEAN and to forging ASEAN identity? What are the benefits of trans-national education models that the rest of the world\, particularly ASEAN’s neighbour to the north\, learn from? As a vibrant hub of eager and motivated youth\, the future of education around the world surely cannot ignore what is happening in Southeast Asia. \nSEACE2020 encourages academics and scholars to meet and exchange ideas and views in a forum stimulating respectful dialogue.
