SUMMARY:Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy
DESCRIPTION:Course description\nThe Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy – an intensive three-day program – serves as an opportunity for experienced humanitarian practitioners\, policymakers\, and others operating in or dealing with conflict settings to deepen their understanding of international humanitarian law (IHL) and other legal frameworks applicable in times of war\, and to explore related policy and operational challenges. \nSuitable for those both with and without prior legal training\, the course covers the sources and development of IHL\, key distinctions between international and non-international armed conflicts\, the applicability of international human rights law in armed conflict\, the obligations of State and non-State actors\, implementation and enforcement of IHL\, and the role of humanitarian actors in situations of armed conflict. Additional “flex sessions” respond to the interests and concerns of registrants and specific issues they are currently facing in their work. \nDiscussions\, case studies\, and exercises reinforce the learning objectives and connect theory with practice\, exploring challenging issues that arise in humanitarian response settings\, such as civilians participating in hostilities\, the conduct of hostilities in urban settings\, the use of certain weapons in highly populated areas\, and the norms governing humanitarian access and assistance. Throughout the course\, examples from contemporary conflicts illustrate the applicability of legal rules taking into account operational challenges faced by practitioners and highlighting how a deeper understanding of IHL contributes to a more effective protection and assistance work. \nParticipants in the Core Professional Training are also encouraged to participate in the two-day Thematic Workshops that directly follow in each location and focus in depth on specific issues of concern to humanitarian actors\, building on the content of the core course. Alumni of previous editions of the Core Training are also encouraged to return for the Thematic Workshops\, which are continuously updated based on the latest developments in the field. \nParticipants who want to prepare for the course are recommended to complete the PHAP Credentialing Program certification in International Legal Frameworks for Humanitarian Action (ILFHA). \nTarget audience\nThe course is designed for mid- and senior-level staff of UN and other intergovernmental agencies\, components of the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement\, NGOs\, and government agencies with direct or indirect experience of humanitarian action in situations of armed conflict. Others with relevant experience\, including diplomats\, military personnel\, and journalists\, are also encouraged to apply. \nHow to apply\nPlease use this application form to apply for the course. \nThe course is open to PHAP members and to non-members. SUMMARY:Southeast Asia Mini Book and Craft Fair
DESCRIPTION:Once a month\, SEA Junction holds a mini book and craft fair focusing on Southeast Asia. \nFor the books\, three kinds of books are displayed: \n\nNew books given in consignment from recognized publishers with an interest in the countries of Southeast Asia including Silkworm Book from Thailand\, ISEAS form Singapore and Yayasan Pustaka Obor from Indonesia\nNew and used books that are double to those of SEA Junction’s Library. SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Ethnic and Community Identity in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:The deadline for abstract submission for the UC Berkeley-UCLA Southeast Asian Studies Conference is January 20\, 2020. The conference will take place April 24-25\, 2020 at UCLA campus. \nConference chair: Professor George Dutton (Asian Languages and Cultures\, UCLA) \nThis conference is designed to explore aspects of group and individual identity in the region. Broadly conceived\, papers would consider the ways in which people are articulating\, embracing\, or contesting different forms and reconfigurations of personal or group identity. Such forms might encompass aspects of ethnic\, gender\, or religious identities\, or perhaps overlaps across these and other dimensions of identity. Papers might consider the political implications of how people and groups articulate or embrace identity and possible conflicts pitting groups against the state or each other. The hope is that papers will explore newly emerging forms of identity as well as long-existing ones that are being reconceptualized or reasserted in new circumstances. Proposals from all disciplines are welcome as are ones that cross disciplinary lines. \nPossible paper topics might touch on any of the following: \n\nstate ethnic labeling policies and their implications;\ncontestation centered on competing ethnic identities and terminologies;\nidentities or communities formulated in terms of gender or sexual orientation;\nidentities defined in terms of religious affiliation or organizations;\nacademic\, state\, or public discourse surrounding racial or ethnic identities;\nethnic or identity politics that cross national boundaries and complicate state narratives.\n\nThe two centers invite submissions for presentations from scholars and graduate students conducting original research in the social sciences and humanities that address the primary theme of the conference. Abstracts (up to 500 words) should be emailed to UCLA CSEAS by Monday\, January 20\, 2020. Abstracts should include your name\, affiliation and discipline and contact information (including e-mail address). \nThe conference is open to all scholars and graduate students.
