SUMMARY:Philippine Youth Leadership Program (PYLP)
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) will welcome the 17th session of the Philippine Youth Leadership Program (PYLP) to NIU in April 2020\, when 28 young people and adult leaders from diverse backgrounds on the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines arrive for a month of leadership training and development. The program’s purpose is to prepare youth leaders in conflict-torn Mindanao to become responsible citizens and contributing members of their communities; build skills that will empower them to be actively engaged in addressing issues in their schools and communities; and foster relationships among youth from different ethnic\, racial\, religious and national groups. While at NIU\, participants are engaged in community service\, field trips\, group projects\, and an American homestay. \nPYLP is one of many youth exchange programs\, including the Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program (SEAYLP)\, funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. For 15 years\, Anthropology Professor Emerita Susan J. Russell and International Training Office Director Lina Ong led PYLP. The Center for Southeast Asian Studies is PYLP’s new home this year\, with Tagalog language instructor Rhodalyne Gallo-Crail and CSEAS Director Eric Jones serving as co-directors.    \nCSEAS will soono be actively recruiting host families for next spring’s session. SUMMARY:Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program (SEAYLP)
DESCRIPTION:The Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Program (SEAYLP) brings 60 high school students from Southeast Asia to the United States each year through a U.S. State Departmentgrant. Participants learn about diversity and cultural appreciation\, community action and activism\, and networking and collaboration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The program utilizes an active approach that includes community service\, field trips to US sites and schools\, group projects\, American family home stays and community engagement. \nNIU’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies will host SEAYLP 2020 in April\, welcoming participants from Brunei\, Cambodia\, Indonesia\, Laos\, Malaysia\, Myanmar (Burma)\, the Philippines\, Singapore\, Thailand and Vietnam. While in the U.S.\, these talented young people will engage in courses and workshops on access and equity\, green technology for economic growth\, security\, leadership\, teambuilding and cultural diversity\, concluding with a three-day study tour of the nation’s capital. \nMandatory Predeparture Forms for Participants \nGlobal Youth Leaders Camp\nAmerican high school students with community service and leadership experience are also invited to participate in the program for three days\, including a weekend Global Youth Leaders Camp and the study tour to Washington\, D.C. Details and dates for the Global Youth Leaders Camp to come. This is a free opportunity for selected Illinois high school students\, ages 15-17\, to work alongside peers from ten Southeast Asian countries\, to learn about diverse cultures\, to build lasting friendships\, practice leadership and civic action skills\, and to join a three-day study tour to Washington\, D.C. \n  \nSource: https://www.niu.edu/cseas/programs/seaylp.shtml \n

SUMMARY:13th International Indonesia Forum Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 13th annual multi-discipline International Indonesia Forum (IIF) will focus on the enormity of Indonesia’s challenge of balancing the interests of the center and the periphery (centripetal and anti-centripetal forces). Questions of development and equal sharing of opportunities and resources as well as the sustainable management and creation of opportunities for Indonesia are reflected in Indonesia’s motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). \nIndonesia is the world’s 4th largest nation with a vibrant democracy rich in people\, territory\, resources – all of which provide huge opportunities\, but generate challenges – in development and sustainable management. This can create tension as the interests of all Indonesians at both the center and at the periphery need to be safeguarded and respected. \nThe protection of Indonesia’s vast cultural\, natural and social heritage and resources when left to the current generation of Indonesians forms a responsibility which is felt by individuals in remote villages all the way up to the top echelons of Indonesian power and even reverberates in respect of the position Indonesia takes in a globalizing world. \nThe theme of the 13th International Indonesia Forum Conference\, The Center and Periphery: Development and Sustainable Management of Indonesian Resources\, touches upon issues of religious\, cultural\, social\, as well as economic and natural resources. For the 13th Conference this year we call upon scholars of various disciplines to explore how the center and periphery can work together to answer the challenges in developing and sustainably managing these Indonesian resources. We invite the contributions of scholars in bringing their expertise to address the various aspects of these issues and welcome them to the 13th International Indonesia Forum\, which will be held at \nUniversitas Katolik Santo Thomas\, Medan\, Indonesia \nfrom 24 to 25 August 2020. \nPersons wishing to present papers at the Conferences are invited to submit a short CV and one-page abstract in electronic form (PDF or Microsoft Word) to Dr. Frank Dhont at frank.dhont@iif.or.id and secretariat@iif.or.id\, respectively\, by 31 March\, 2020.
