SUMMARY:FROM FEAR TO RESILIENCE: STORYTELLING OF COVID-19 IN SOUTHEAST ASIA  Call for Photo\, Short Video and Art Essays by SEA Junction and Partners
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThese days we are inundated with photos of deaths\, ICUs and suffering\, creating fear as an incentive to keep us all at home. No matter how well-meaning\, this narrative of COVID-19 remains one-sided and may have many unwanted consequences. We know from the HIV epidemic that fear only changes behavior in the short term and it may cause traumas and prejudices that make it more difficult to learn to live with the virus. This narrative also leads to seeing the ‘other’ as the ‘enemy’ who can potentially infect us\, triggering unnecessary stigma and discrimination that hampers the efforts to control the pandemic. More needs to be done to raise understanding of the rationale of preventive measures and to provide the social and economic means to enable people to apply those. \nLiving through a pandemic with unforeseen reality and unending uncertainties for over a year has created an epidemic of fear. As a consequence\, there have been stigmatization and blaming to infected people\, especially vulnerable population. With the current surges in COVID-19 infection across Southeast Asia\, the fear of contracting the disease remains and is even escalated when the vaccine is in shortage and not accessible to many. They are nervous of not getting timely vaccinated\, not to mention the concern on vaccine’s safety and efficacy. The fear also extends beyond contraction and manifests in socio-economic stress as a result of the pandemic impacts. In particular\, the poor and disadvantaged groups have been hardest hit with a deepening of poverty since the existing inequalities have been exacerbated. \nSEA Junction invites all to make an effort to collectively provide a different visual story of the pandemic in Southeast Asia that shows strength and hope. We believe in the importance of reducing fear and promote informed policy and public discussion with more accurate reporting of the epidemiological realities of COVID-19. We need to show that COVID-19 is also a tale of survival\, resilience and solidarity. \nWe are calling for short stories in the form of photo essays\, short documentaries and illustrated art essays in any language of the region (to be later translated into English) or in English. We will then select\, curate and showcase them in a special section on our online platform and on our social media. We will be also looking for other partners interested in broadcasting these works of resilience. When the COVID-19 situation ease\, we will use the selected visual storytelling works to organize a 2-week long exhibition at BACC. \nPossible topics include but not limited to: \n\ncultural rituals and faith to counter our anxiety;\nexperiences of quarantine (at home or at reserved locations) and survival;\npeople that continue to work in essential services;\nlaborers and migrant workers that keep the economy running by continuing to work in construction\, agriculture\, fishing\, etc.;\nrural and urban community organizing to control the pandemic and provide support to the needy;\ninnovation and adaptation of technology in resource poor settings;\nstrategic intervention to enhance people survival beyond relief;\nand people that fight for social protection and for upholding of privacy and other human rights amidst this pandemic.\n\nNeedless to say\, ethical and safety principles need to be respected in the production of the stories\, and compliance of preventive measures is a must at any time. \nPlease submit approximately 15 photos and/or videos along with short essay to  southeastasiajunction@gmail.com. SUMMARY:The Mekong is Blue and Dried: Visual Storytelling of the Mekong River’s Environmental Degradation Open Call for Photo & Art Essays
DESCRIPTION: \nThe Mekong River is the most diverse in fresh water fishery in the world with the greatest biodiversity after the Amazon. It originates in the Tibetan plateau and flows through mainland Southeast Asia before emptying in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta into the South China sea. The Mekong feeds more than 60 million people who live along its entire route. Among them there are indigenous communities that depend on the Mekong for their natural resource-based livelihoods and as a source of income. Their way of life is today threatened by the ongoing dam-building race since the first dam was built on the Mekong mainstream 20 years ago. \nToday\, eleven dams are planned for the lower mainstream Mekong\, and 300 more are in the waiting on feeder waterways. Cumulative impacts have been felt by the riparian communities living downstream. The first lower Mekong dam Xayaburi in Laos operated for a test run in July 2019 exacerbated the drought in the region. The Mekong water level is at its lowest in 50 years. The second dam on the lower Mekong in Laos (Don Sa Hong) was built against concerns regarding its blocking major channels of migratory fishes to spawn upstream and in the Mekong’s tributary rivers. In particular\, it affects the migration of endangered Irrawaddy dolphins living close to the Laotian-Cambodian border where the dam is also located. \nAdding to the multiple impacts of dams\, the collapse of Xe Pian-Xe Namnoy saddle dams on Xe Kong River which is a tributary of the Mekong River in Southern Laos\, killed at least 40 people and displaced more than 4\,500 people. This was a dark reminder of the threats dams pose on people’s lives and the lack of accountability of multinational corporations. \nThe combination of upstream and downstream dams’ operations has blocked the natural rich nutrients and sediments and the water flow. In late 2019\, the Mekong turned into rare blue color instead of its usual brown. The blue color of the Mekong reflects “dead” for aquatic animals\, other animals that dwell in the Mekong riverbank and millions of people who depend for their livelihood on the biodiversity of the River. \nNetworks of environmental experts\, civil society\, media and academia tireless continue to advocate for environmentally and socially friendly measures for the Mekong River.  They raise questions about the need of such dams in view of other forms of green energy such as solar power\, the extenuating risks associated with hydropower construction\, and the devastating social and economic effects on local populations. \nThis initiative launched by SEA Junction with the support of the Samdhana Institute on 15 June 2020 for a period of three months\, aims to contribute to these ongoing efforts through the creative use of visual documentation and art. We are pleased that the Mekong Environment Forum has offered to partner with us on this and help with promoting the initiative and sharing relevant material. SUMMARY:Call for Proposals\, Small Grant Program “Staying Resilient Amid the Pandemic in Southeast Asia”
DESCRIPTION:In Southeast Asia\, the spread of COVID-19 has been relatively slow when compared to other regions. With the exception of the Philippines and Indonesia\, the number of seriously ill and death cases remain in the two digits. This\, however\, does not imply that the pandemic should be taken lightly nor that the health\, economic and political impacts are insignificant. Like in other parts of the words\, human suffering is real\, with a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable. The pandemic has also highlighted deep inequalities and socio-economic and human rights challenges. \nIrrespective of the capacity of governments to tackle the pandemics\, all over the region civil society groups\, communities and committed individuals have shown great resilience and solidarity. All kinds of small-scale initiatives have been started to battle the pandemic and cope with its local impacts from providing relief goods and PPE equipment to launching education campaigns and financial schemes. \nRecognizing the importance of these diverse initiatives and the fact that they are often undertaken with minimal resources\, SEA Junction is launching the “Staying Resilient Amid the Pandemic in Southeast Asia” small-grant program. The 3-year program\, with support of the China Medical Board Foundation and WIEGO\, provides funds to efforts working to build social capital\, strengthen community resilience\, improve the living and health conditions of local communities (geographical as well as functional) and enhance their capacity to cope with the current situation of COVID-19 and its longer-term socio-economic and health impacts. \nSmall grants for an average of USD 2\,500 will be awarded to selected groups and individuals. Funds can be used to complement existing resources as well as seeds or matching funds. Besides providing financing\, the program will also share relevant COVID-19 and health equity relevant information and knowledge\, foster cross-fertilization of ideas and interventions\, help build networks and conduct joint advocacy activities. \nEligibility and Priority \n\nThis call is open to individuals and groups (both formal and informal)\nFocus is on socio-economic and health dimensions of COVID-19\nActivities are to be located in Southeast Asia\nPriority is given to community-led and inclusive initiatives\nEmphasis on equity and resilience\n\nHow to Apply: \n\nDownload and fill the proposal form provided here: Proposal Template\nUse English or any Southeast Asian languages\nSubmit your brief proposal by email to southeastasiajunction@gmail.com\n\n  \n \nThe first batch of applications was closed in September 2020. Amid the new wave of outbreak in many countries\, the community demand for support is great with almost 140 relevant proposals received. Thanks to individual and non-profit donations as per our fundraising campaign at the end of 2020\, we have been able to increase our initial funds and grant 23 local initiatives from different locations in 8 countries. SUMMARY:Bamazaga Autumn 2020 Online Burmese Course
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your interest in the first Bamazaga Autumn Online Burmese Language Course 2020. Having learnt some of the benefits of bringing Burmese classes to a worldwide global classroom in May/June this year\, and because of changes in the Burmese provision at our home university in London\, we are offering an Autumn Online Course in Burmese which will run for 10 weeks October to December 2020. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved teacher Saya John Okell\, who passed away in August\, and continue spreading the delights of the Burmese language in his memory. \nThe principal instructor of the Autumn Course will be Justin Watkins of SOAS\, University of London\, who will be assisted by colleagues as necessary/available. \nClasses will be available at all levels\, from beginner to advanced. We cannot confirm which levels will run\, or at what times of the day\, until closer to the course starting date\, when we have some idea of how many takers there will be at each level and in which time zones. \nPlease make sure you read all the information below before completing the application form. \nCourse content:\nWe offer classes in Burmese at all levels\, from complete beginner to advanced.\nThe beginners class offers 20 hours of basic reading/writing and speaking for students with no Burmese.\nAt other levels\, you will have listening/speaking classes (working with recorded audio or video material at an appropriate level) and reading/speaking classes (working with written texts).\nAll classes will give opportunities to explore and discuss topics in Burmese grammar. Extra classes or activities devoted to grammar may be organised on demand. \nTeachinɡ formatː\nClasses will be held live online in real time using Zoom (or similar). Participants will need to confirm their ability to join classes online on the chosen platform using both video and audio (not just audio) with a webcam and headphones on a computer or laptop (not just a smartphone). The organisers will do their best to help with technical matters but cannot be responsible for classes or activities missed for technical reasons. We will exchange materials and homework using Dropbox (or similar). Homework tasks will be set where appropriate and interaction between students will be facilitated using a dedicated Slack site. We may explore using social media for language practice if there is demand. \nCourse Dates:\nThe course is taught over ten weeks. Classes will take place at various times on Thursdays and Fridays starting on Thursday 1 October and run until 11 December\, allowing for a week off in the middle (likely 5-6 November). It may be necessary (or desirable) to move to other days of the week if convenient for all involved. \n?????????:\nAll students will have at least 20 hours of classes in total\, comprising 2 separate hour-long classes each week. We will work out a timetable to accommodate learners in timezones from California to Australia\, and so students at either extreme may need to be available for class in the early morning or late evening. \nWe will produce a draft timetable before the start of the course\, but reserve the right to make changes once the course has begun. Please accept that the timetable cannot be tailored to all individual needs. DESCRIPTION:Zooming in on Biodiversity\, a photo contest conceptualized by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB)\, is open to all amateur and professional photographers from the 10 ASEAN Member States. \nWhile 2020 has been designated as the “super year for biodiversity\,” it is also the year when the world was hit hard by the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This pandemic resulted to lockdowns in many countries\, travel bans\, and movement restrictions. Hence\, the theme for this year’s staging is Healing with Biodiversity: Building a Better Normal\, to promote appreciation for the Region’s rich biodiversity and thereby promote its conservation to prevent future pandemics. \nOver-all Theme: Healing with Biodiversity: Building a Better Normal \nSubmissions can be photos depicting humans’ perception of biodiversity in the time of a global health crisis\, their appreciation for the Region’s wildlife species\, and conservation initiatives to prevent future pandemics. \nSub-themes: \n\nGlimpse of a Better Normal – Photo entries for this sub-theme can be views from a person’s window\, nature in the time of lockdowns\, photos that portray social distancing\, photos showing how humans live in harmony with nature\, and portraits of ASEAN wildlife species in their natural habitats.\nThe Macro Life – Entries can be photos of plants and animal species using macro lenses. Since a lot of areas are under strict lockdowns\, photographers may not be able to take good outdoor shots. This sub-theme will allow them to magnify species that can easily be found in their homes\, gardens\, and other areas near them.\n\nSpecial Category: Life within and around ASEAN Heritage Parks \nThe ASEAN Heritage Parks (AHP) Programme is a flagship programme of the ASEAN that was established to recognise national parks and nature reserves with outstanding wilderness and biodiversity values. It offers opportunities to strengthen regional connectivity and cooperation\, as ecosystems and their services transcend national borders. The ACB serves as the Secretariat of the AHP Programme. \nThe AHPs are outstanding protected areas in the ASEAN region in terms of ecological completeness\, biodiversity richness\, and conservation importance. \nThis special category will highlight the natural and cultural richness of ASEAN Heritage Parks. DESCRIPTION:Thailand Sustainability Expo 2020 invites you to join ASEAN Youth Speech Contest under the theme “Sufficiency for Sustainability”. \nIn the speech\, contestants are required to: \n\nShare your perspective on global challenges that need urgent solutions\nPropose solutions to achieve one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals\nConvince the audience to act\n\nEligibility \n\nStudents from ASEAN Member States aged between 15-25\n\nLanguages of Presentation \nContestants can present your speech in English or Thai.
