SUMMARY:FROM FEAR TO RESILIENCE: STORYTELLING OF COVID-19 IN SOUTHEAST ASIA  Call for Photo\, Short Video and Art Essays by SEA Junction and Partners
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nThese days we are inundated with photos of deaths\, ICUs and suffering\, creating fear as an incentive to keep us all at home. No matter how well-meaning\, this narrative of COVID-19 remains one-sided and may have many unwanted consequences. We know from the HIV epidemic that fear only changes behavior in the short term and it may cause traumas and prejudices that make it more difficult to learn to live with the virus. This narrative also leads to seeing the ‘other’ as the ‘enemy’ who can potentially infect us\, triggering unnecessary stigma and discrimination that hampers the efforts to control the pandemic. More needs to be done to raise understanding of the rationale of preventive measures and to provide the social and economic means to enable people to apply those. \nLiving through a pandemic with unforeseen reality and unending uncertainties for over a year has created an epidemic of fear. As a consequence\, there have been stigmatization and blaming to infected people\, especially vulnerable population. With the current surges in COVID-19 infection across Southeast Asia\, the fear of contracting the disease remains and is even escalated when the vaccine is in shortage and not accessible to many. They are nervous of not getting timely vaccinated\, not to mention the concern on vaccine’s safety and efficacy. The fear also extends beyond contraction and manifests in socio-economic stress as a result of the pandemic impacts. In particular\, the poor and disadvantaged groups have been hardest hit with a deepening of poverty since the existing inequalities have been exacerbated. \nSEA Junction invites all to make an effort to collectively provide a different visual story of the pandemic in Southeast Asia that shows strength and hope. We believe in the importance of reducing fear and promote informed policy and public discussion with more accurate reporting of the epidemiological realities of COVID-19. We need to show that COVID-19 is also a tale of survival\, resilience and solidarity. \nWe are calling for short stories in the form of photo essays\, short documentaries and illustrated art essays in any language of the region (to be later translated into English) or in English. We will then select\, curate and showcase them in a special section on our online platform and on our social media. We will be also looking for other partners interested in broadcasting these works of resilience. When the COVID-19 situation ease\, we will use the selected visual storytelling works to organize a 2-week long exhibition at BACC. \nPossible topics include but not limited to: \n\ncultural rituals and faith to counter our anxiety;\nexperiences of quarantine (at home or at reserved locations) and survival;\npeople that continue to work in essential services;\nlaborers and migrant workers that keep the economy running by continuing to work in construction\, agriculture\, fishing\, etc.;\nrural and urban community organizing to control the pandemic and provide support to the needy;\ninnovation and adaptation of technology in resource poor settings;\nstrategic intervention to enhance people survival beyond relief;\nand people that fight for social protection and for upholding of privacy and other human rights amidst this pandemic.\n\nNeedless to say\, ethical and safety principles need to be respected in the production of the stories\, and compliance of preventive measures is a must at any time. \nPlease submit approximately 15 photos and/or videos along with short essay to  southeastasiajunction@gmail.com. SUMMARY:Call for Proposals\, Small Grant Program “Staying Resilient Amid the Pandemic in Southeast Asia”
DESCRIPTION:In Southeast Asia\, the spread of COVID-19 has been relatively slow when compared to other regions. With the exception of the Philippines and Indonesia\, the number of seriously ill and death cases remain in the two digits. This\, however\, does not imply that the pandemic should be taken lightly nor that the health\, economic and political impacts are insignificant. Like in other parts of the words\, human suffering is real\, with a disproportionate impact on the most vulnerable. The pandemic has also highlighted deep inequalities and socio-economic and human rights challenges. \nIrrespective of the capacity of governments to tackle the pandemics\, all over the region civil society groups\, communities and committed individuals have shown great resilience and solidarity. All kinds of small-scale initiatives have been started to battle the pandemic and cope with its local impacts from providing relief goods and PPE equipment to launching education campaigns and financial schemes. \nRecognizing the importance of these diverse initiatives and the fact that they are often undertaken with minimal resources\, SEA Junction is launching the “Staying Resilient Amid the Pandemic in Southeast Asia” small-grant program. The 3-year program\, with support of the China Medical Board Foundation and WIEGO\, provides funds to efforts working to build social capital\, strengthen community resilience\, improve the living and health conditions of local communities (geographical as well as functional) and enhance their capacity to cope with the current situation of COVID-19 and its longer-term socio-economic and health impacts. \nSmall grants for an average of USD 2\,500 will be awarded to selected groups and individuals. Funds can be used to complement existing resources as well as seeds or matching funds. Amid the new wave of outbreak in many countries\, the community demand for support is great with almost 140 relevant proposals received. SUMMARY:Defiant Art: A Year of Resistance to the Myanmar Coup in Images
DESCRIPTION:Since 1 February 2021\, Myanmar has been in turmoil as the Myanmar Army\, known as the Tatmadaw\, detained State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint following a general election which Suu Kyi’s NLD party won by a landslide. The coup d’état led by General Min Aung Hlaing brought an end to a decade of semi-democratic rule and returned full power to the military\, a state of emergency and gross human rights abuses. Courageously\, the population has been resisting and demanding the release of the imprisoned leaders\, as well as a booming number of prisoners and the restoration of democratic rule. A massive civil disobedience movement has emerged and hundreds of thousands continue to take to the streets in spite of the military’s use of lethal force against protesters. Amidst the failure of the international community to take action\, atrocities are being committed on an increasing scale\, with the opposition National Unity Government (NUG) in exile resorting to form the People Defence Force and justify armed resistance. As of 8 January\,1447 people are confirmed killed by the junta coup and a total of 8468 people are currently under detention. In total\, 78 people are sentenced to death\, in person and absentia\, including two children.  \nAs the anniversary of the coup on 1 February 2022 approaches\, SEA Junction in collaboration with Art for Freedom (Myanmar)\, now known as Raise Three Fingers (RTF)\, and Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR) is holding a creative exhibition on 18 January -13 February 2022 from 11AM to 7PM in solidarity with the uprising movement in Myanmar. A series of 13 boards with artworks by artists from Myanmar and beyond\, commemorating and contesting the key events in the course of the year\, will be displayed on the curved wall on the 4th floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC). Together\, the boards form a history in images of the evolving political situation in Myanmar—economic and social impacts have also been huge\, but are not the focus of the exhibition—highlighting the importance of art to raise awareness\, chronicle what is happening and encourage resistance. \nThe boards were adapted\, enriched and updated from an exhibition and fundraising event held in London last August. The artworks are from the archives of Art for Freedom as well as from the many that have been circulating on social media\, including posters and memes. Whenever possible\, the artist has been recognized\, but we remain grateful to the many who cannot be named for security reasons or who we were not able to identify. The variety and number of artworks is impressive\, testifying to the creative power the resistance to the coup has unleashed\, but due to limited time and space we could not include all those we admired. SUMMARY:RCSD Call for Myanmar Research Fellows
DESCRIPTION:The Regional Center for Social Science and Sustainable Development (RCSD)\, Faculty of Social Sciences\, Chiang Mai University is delighted to launch a second call for Myanmar Research Fellows. Joining our first batch of 12 fellows\, we are looking to support fellows working either on issues of forced displacement\, migration\, and refugees\, or on topics relating to inclusion\, federalism\, and democracy. We aim to engage researchers who wish to undertake a specific project and would benefit from engaging with the dynamic community of scholars at CMU. \nThe fellowships will initially run for a period of 6 months\, beginning April 2022 through until October 2022\, with the possibility of extension to complete a full 12 months. Fellows will be provided with a living and accommodation allowance\, medical insurance\, the cost of international travel and quarantine in Thailand\, and a working space and visa support. They will have access to facilities at the university and form part of our network of Thai\, Myanmar\, and international researchers. \nThe basic requirements for applying to these positions are: \n\nExperience in researching in at least one of the two areas in or around Myanmar:\n\nForced displacement\, migration\, and refugee issues\nInclusion\, federalism\, and democracy\n\n\nThe ability to continue to engage in research or efforts to support inclusion in Myanmar having been impacted by events of the past year.\nRobust spoken and written skills in both Myanmar and English is desirable\, as are ethnic language skills.\nA master’s degree in any subject in the social sciences and humanities is a requirement. Additional research experience is desirable.\n\nAdditional information: The awarding of fellowships will be competitively assessed and awarded by a selection committee. In accepting the fellowship\, the researchers will commit to producing at least one manuscript ready for publication or journal submission within the fellowship period. The fellows will also be expected to contribute to the academic community at RCSD and Chiang Mai University in different ways. \nAs a small research center\, we are committed to the production of grounded\, community-engaged knowledge on development in our region\, and we hope the fellows will continue in this tradition. While this is a full-time position\, RCSD acknowledges that in the present context fellows may have other ongoing commitments. SUMMARY:IDREAM: Capacity Building for Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) Living in Exile
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) is accepting applications from Human Rights Defenders living in exile and their supporting HRD organization to participate in a dynamic capacity development and mentoring partnership called “IDREAM.” \nIDREAM (Incubator for Defenders Remaining in Exile to Advance Movements) is a collaborative and global capacity development project designed to help address the unique needs of HRDs living in exile. IDREAM will provide training and networking activities with the goals of:  advancing advocacy efforts\, promoting HRD’s psychosocial resilience and well-being\, and improving exiled HRD’s physical and digital security. At the end of the selection process\, 10 partner HRDs living in exile around the world and their supporting HRD organization will be invited to join IDREAM. The project’s activities will take place from approximately July 2022 through October 2023. SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion “Irrawaddy Mon Amour”
DESCRIPTION:LGBTIQ and gender-diverse people in Myanmar are often subjected to human rights violations and systematic violence. With outdated criminal laws failing to provide protection and recognition\, coupled with a lack of social acceptance\, they also face day-to-day discrimination and social exclusion. Despite the increased risks of being targeted\, LGBTIQ people have actively participated in the movement since the beginning of the coup which took place on 1 February 2021. According to Outright Action International\, many of them are openly protesting with rainbow anti-coup signs\, while others keep their identities hidden for security reasons. While Myanmar’s police and military are notorious for verbally\, sexually\, and physically abusing LGBTIQ people particularly transfeminine people\, there is little information available about how many of them have been arrested\, detained\, tortured and killed. Recently BBC Burmese reported the arrest of three transgender women including Gucci Aung. Her belonging and house were confiscated and she is at heightened risk of violence and abuses. \nIn remembrance of such incidents and in solidarity with LGBTIQ people in Myanmar\, SEA Junction will screen two films about LGBTIQ people in Myanmar on two Saturdays at 5 pm: This Kind of Love on 5 February and Irrawaddy Mon Amour on 12 February. Irrawaddy Mon Amour tells the story of a young gay couple who\, with the aid of LGBTIQ activists\, Buddhist monks\, and village housewives\, fight for their right to love and marry in a country struggling to redefine itself in the wake of a brutal totalitarian regime.
