SUMMARY:Exhibition “Cartooning the ASEAN Way of Non-Interference and Consensus”
DESCRIPTION:SEA Junction\, in collaboration with Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR)\, will hold the Exhibition “Cartooning the ASEAN Way of Non-Interference and Consensus” from 22 October to 3 November 2024 at the Curved Wall\, 4th floor (Comics Exhibition) and Corner Space\, 1st floor (Cartoons Exhibitions)\, Bangkok Art and Culture Center to reflect on the future of the role of ASEAN in addressing current and emerging issues in the region. On the 4th floor\, comics are displayed\, while cartoons are showcased on the first floor. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic\, the coup in Myanmar and autocratic changes in other member states\, unresolved geo-political tensions and recessionary pressures have brought attention towards ASEAN\, prompting crucial questions on whether it is fulfilling or failing to fulfill its role\, and have put a spotlight on regional development and interaction. With growing questions on whether ASEAN is indeed people-oriented as it claims in its Charter and “for whom” and whose interests ASEAN is acting\, there is an urgency to promote public discussion on the so-called “ASEAN Way” and particularly on the two core institutional principles of “Consensus” and “Non-Interference”. \nBoth concepts are today under discussion. Consensus has been seen as playing a positive role in fostering unity among the diverse members\, yet it has often delayed response\, with some arguing in favor of changing the rule to a majority one to enhance effectiveness. Likewise\, the Non-Interference principle is deemed to have given a positive contribution to stop unduly interferences and promote respect “for the independence\, sovereignty\, equality\, territorial integrity\, and national identity of all nations” as stated in ASEAN’s Treaty of Amenity. However\, amid a worsening human rights crisis in the region especially in Myanmar and emerging transnational threats\, ASEAN has failed to provide protection of its people and ensure the respect of their human rights by appealing to this same principle. \nThe aim of this exhibition is to highlight how creativity can help highlight  complex issues for a general public and to promote a critical understanding of ASEAN and its Consensus and Non-Interference principles. Cartoons and comics combine textual and visual elements to express critical thinking and create narratives\, balancing humor with seriousness. The comics and cartoons from various participants across Southeast Asia vividly also portray the role of ASEAN through engaging visual elements. We trust that in this way they can draw attention to regional governance and trigger a conversation on steps needed in realizing a people-oriented ASEAN. \nThis exhibition consists of the artwork of the winners of the Cartoons and Comics Competition “Cartooning the ASEAN Way of Non-Interference and Consensus” held by SEA Junction in collaboration with AJAR in early 2024 as well as selected artworks from other participants in both the cartoons and the comics categories. DESCRIPTION:SEA Junction ร่วมมือกับ Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR) จะจัดนิทรรศการ “การ์ตูนภาพ วิถีอาเซียนของหลักการการไม่แทรกแซงกิจการภายใน และหลักฉันทามติของประชาคมอาเซียน” วันที่ 22 ตุลาคม ถึง 3 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2567 ณ ผนังโค้ง ชั้น 4 (จัดแสดงภาพวาดเล่าเรื่องหรือคอมิค) และ มุมสามเหลี่ยม ชั้น 1 (จัดแสดงการ์ตูน) หอศิลปวัฒนธรรมแห่งกรุงเทพมหานครฯ เพื่อร่วมกันสะท้อนถึงบทบาทของอาเซียนในอนาคตกับการแก้ไขปัญหาในปัจจุบันรวมถึงประเด็นต่างๆ ที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้นในภูมิภาค \nวิกฤตโรคระบาดโควิด 19 รัฐประหารในเมียนมา การเปลี่ยนแปลงเชิงเผด็จการในประเทศสมาชิกอื่นๆในอาเซียน  ความตึงเครียดทางภูมิรัฐศาสตร์ที่ยังไม่ได้รับการแก้ไข และความกดดันจากภาวะเศรษฐกิจถดถอยได้ดึงดูดความสนใจมายังประชาคมอาเซียน ก่อให้เกิดคำถามสำคัญว่าอาเซียนกำลังทำหน้าที่ของตนอย่างเต็มที่หรือล้มเหลวในบทบาทของตน และได้ฉายให้เห็นถึงการพัฒนาและการมีปฏิสัมพันธ์ในระดับภูมิภาค พร้อมกับคำถามที่เพิ่มขึ้นว่า อาเซียนนั้นยังเป็นองค์กรที่ให้ความสำคัญกับประชาชนเป็นศูนย์กลางจริงๆตามที่อ้างอิงในกฏบัตรอาเซียนหรือไม่ และ อาเซียนกำลังมุ่งทำหน้าที่เพื่อผลประโยชน์ “เพื่อใคร” นอกจากนี้ ยังมีความเร่งด่วนในการส่งเสริมการแลกเปลี่ยนในสาธารณะเกี่ยวกับ “วิถีอาเซียน” โดยเฉพาะหลักการสองหลักขององค์กรอาเซียน นั่นคือ “ฉันทามติ” และ “การไม่แทรกแซง” \nหลักการทั้งสองที่กล่าวถึงนี้เป็นที่ถกเถียงกันในปัจจุบัน โดยหลักฉันทามติ ถูกมองว่าเป็นบทบาทเชิงบวกที่สร้างเสริมความเป็นเอกภาพของประเทศสมาชิกที่มีความแตกต่างหลากหลาย ทว่าก็มักจะมีการโต้ตอบที่ล่าช้า ส่งผลให้ผู้คนบางส่วนโต้แย้ง และสนับสนุนให้มีการเปลี่ยนหลักการนี้ให้เป็นระบบตามเสียงข้างมาก เพื่อสร้างประสิทธิภาพ เช่นเดียวกัน หลักการการไม่แทรกแซงกิจการภายในก็ถูกมองว่าได้สร้างผลเชิงบวกเพื่อป้องกันการแทรกแซง และส่งเสริมการเคารพซึ่ง “ความเป็นเอกราช อธิปไตย ความเสมอภาค อธิปไตยเหนือดินแดน และเอกลักษณ์ทางเชื้อชาติของทุกๆชาติ” ดังที่ได้กล่าวไว้ในสนธิสัญญามิตรภาพและความร่วมมือในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ (Treaty of Animity) อย่างไรก็ตาม ท่ามกลางวิกฤตทางด้านสิทธิมนุษยชนที่ตกต่ำลงในภูมิภาคโดยเฉพาะในเมียนมา และภัยคุกคามข้ามพรมแดนที่กำลังก่อตัวขึ้น อาเซียนได้ประสบความล้มเหลวในการให้ความคุ้มครองแก่ประชาชนและในการให้ความเคารพต่อสิทธิมนุษยชนของพวกเขาหากอ้างอิงจากหลักการเดียวกันนี้ \nเป้าหมายของนิทรรศการนี้ คือเพื่อส่งเสริมความคิดสร้างสรรค์และสนับสนุนความเข้าใจเชิงวิพากษ์ต่อประชาคมอาเซียน ในด้านหลักการฉันทามติและการไม่แทรกแซงกิจการภายใน โดยทั้งภาพวาดการ์ตูนและคอมิคผสมผสานองค์ประกอบทั้งตัวอักษรและภาพวาดเพื่อแสดงถึงไอเดีย และสร้างเรื่องเล่าเพื่อสื่อสารถึงแนวคิด สร้างสมดุลระหว่างความขบขันและเรื่องจริงจัง คอมิคและการ์ตูนจากผู้เข้าร่วมจากทั่วเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เหล่านี้ สื่อถึงบทบาทของอาเซียนผ่านองค์ประกอบทางทัศนศิลป์ได้อย่างน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจ เราเชื่อว่าด้วยวิธีนี้ ภาพวาดการ์ตูนเหล่านี้จะช่วยดึงดูดความสนใจของผู้เข้าชม ให้ฉุกคิดถึงการปกครองระดับภูมิภาคในระดับอาเซียน และจุดประกายให้เกิดการพูดคุยอย่างจริงจัง ถึงขั้นตอนที่จำเป็นในการสร้างประชาคมอาเซียนที่มี ‘ประชาชนเป็นศูนย์กลาง’ อย่างแท้จริง \nนิทรรศการนี้จะประกอบด้วยผลงานของผู้ชนะการประกวด “การ์ตูนภาพ วิถีอาเซียน หลักการการไม่แทรกแซงกิจการภายใน และหลักฉันทามติของประชาคมอาเซียน” ทั้งในหมวดการ์ตูนและหมวดภาพวาดเล่าเรื่องหรือคอมิค รวมถึงผลงานที่ถูกคัดเลือกจากผู้ร่วมประกวดคนอื่น ๆ รายชื่อของผู้ชนะการประกวดมีดังต่อไปนี้ \nคอมิค หรือการ์ตูนภาพเล่าเรื่อง \nรางวัลที่ 1 Gandjar Harta Widodo จากประเทศอินโดนีเซีย \nรางวัลที่ 2 Christian Oliver A. SUMMARY:Global Asias in a Deglobalizing World?
DESCRIPTION:The 64th annual meeting of the Southeast Conference of the Association for Asian Studies will be hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington\, KY\, on January 24-26\, 2025. \nAs an academic discipline with roots tracing back to the Cold War era and its associated ideologies\, Asian studies is currently facing a host of new challenges and opportunities due to the evolving geopolitical landscape within the Asia-Pacific region and globally. The forthcoming 2025 SEC-AAS conference serves as a vital platform for scholarly engagement and debate aimed at advancing the field of Asian studies amidst what could be arguably termed as a process of “deglobalization.” Factors such as the wars in Ukraine and Palestine\, the escalating tension between China and the United States as well as other countries in Asia\, and the rise of ultranationalist groups worldwide collectively contribute to this significant restructuring process that could bring about profound changes. \nWe cordially invite conference participants to evaluate the dynamic concepts and methodologies that are paramount to our understanding of Global Asias at this pivotal moment. These encompass\, though are not confined to\, overarching themes such as “Global\,” “Asia(s)\,” “Asian/ness\,” “Asian American\,” “Asian Diaspora\,” “Asia-Pacific\,” and “Transpacific.” Of particular interest are submissions that focus on understudied areas\, notably South and Southeast Asia\, and that offer innovative and unconventional perspectives on the following submissions that engage with\, but are not limited to: \n\nHow is the construct of “Asia(s)” formulated as a multifaceted entity\, encompassing geopolitical\, material\, cultural\, and imaginative dimensions\, across spatial\, temporal\, and affective realms?\nWhat are the various representations\, manifestations\, actions\, and transformations of “Asia(s)\,” and what are the underlying factors contributing to their diversity and contestation\, particularly when viewed through feminist\, queer\, anti-racist\, and other critical lenses?\nIn what ways do various stakeholders—including individuals\, communities\, environments\, both human and nonhuman agents\, and different marginalized groups—participate in the ongoing negotiation\, contestation\, and reshaping of “Asia(s)”?\nWithin the context of the New Cold War era\, how have the trajectories of Asian studies and Asian American studies diverged and converged?\nWhat innovative methodologies and conceptual frameworks offer potentials for advancing the study of Asia(s) beyond the confines of the nation-state paradigm\, with a particular emphasis on exploring cross-border and transnational contexts and exchanges?\nTo what extent are AI technologies being integrated into both research and pedagogical practices concerning Asia(s)\, and what implications does this integration have for the field?\nHow might scholars explore and capitalize on potential synergies between the fields of global Appalachian studies and global Asian studies? Studies of global health and global Asias?\nIn what ways is creative writing\, including using the forms of (digital) graphic narratives and video games\, being utilized and experimented with as an innovative methodological approach for conducting research on Asia(s) and more?\n\nWe extend a warm invitation to inquiries that deepen our understanding of the histories\, cultures\, languages\, peoples\, diasporas\, and both local and global issues within the expansive purview of “Asia(s)” as broadly defined.
