SUMMARY:Photo Exhibition “Life Stories of Klong Toey 2006 – 2026” by Yoonki Kim
DESCRIPTION:Background \nKhlong Toey (meaning pandan leaf canal) is an urban district in Bangkok expressing the city profound socio-economic divides. Right in the heart of the capital and close to the main port\, Khlong Toey hosts the city’s largest low-income community of about 100\,000 people. Born in the 1950s on land owned by the Port Authority of Thailand out of a squatter settlement of migrants from the North and the North East of Thailand\, it continues to expand as the need for cheap housing remains among the many who arrive in Bangkok in search of better livelihoods. Today\, a unique mix of people\, including from outside Thailand\, crowd a low and swamp-like area of about 1.5 square kilometers with their tiny and fragile homes and makes a living with limited means and amidst poor sanitation and health care\, crime and drug addiction among others. \nThe photo exhibition “Life Stories of Klong Toey” was first organized by SEA Junction in the first floor of BACC on 10-22 July 2018.  Now\, for the 20th anniversary of his work\, a larger exhibition with continued chronicles of the lives of seven residents between 2006 and 2026 will be held from 3 – 15 March 2026\, on the Curved Wall\, 4th Floor of the BACC. As the photographer tells it\, he did his first photos in 2006 as part of a project focusing on poverty and deprivation. However\, as time passed\, he saw that there was much more to the life of the “have nots” and started to appreciate the uniqueness of the community and people’s resilience\, solidarity in finding communal solutions\, and openness in receiving new comers\, notwithstanding the tensions and up and down of daily life. \nHis project “70Rai project” named after a part of the slum\, became his life work and he has kept making weekly visits to the community and taken thousands of photos of the people who live there. By sharing his chronicles of a few Khlong Toey residents\, Kim Yoonki hopes that the exhibition will confront some of the stereotypes about “poor people” and foster the respect they deserve. \nDetails of the exhibition opening will be shared later. \n \nFor more information\, please email: info@seajunction.org or phone/wa: +66970024140 \nNB: The event is free\, donations are welcome to support SEA Junction activities. \nPhotographer Short Bio \nKim Yoonki was born in 1955 and was raised and lived in Seoul until 1994 when he settled in Bangkok. He is a self-taught photographer who has started the 70Rai project in an underprivileged area of Khlongtoey\, Bangkok in January 2006. Every week he visits the area and takes pictures using only black and white films of the people and the community and donate the prints to them.  He is also making a website with the archive of all the photos taken ensuring access for the people of Klong Toey. \nOrganizer \nSEA Junction\, OUR Venue on Southeast Asia  \nSEA Junction aims to foster understanding and appreciation of Southeast Asia in all its socio-cultural dimensions –from arts and lifestyles to economy and development. Conveniently located at Room 408 of the Bangkok Arts and Culture Centre or BACC (across MBK\, BTS National Stadium) SEA junction facilitates public access to knowledge resources and exchanges among students\, practitioners and Southeast Asia lovers. SUMMARY:Call for Stories | Living Legacies: Tales of Culture and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:A call for stories from Asia and the Pacific \n\nHow is climate change changing the way culture is practiced in your community?\nWhat traditions\, places\, skills\, or knowledge are being affected – and how are you adapting?\nAnd how are culture and heritage helping people to respond and build resilience?\n\nUNESCO and ICHCAP invite you to share personal stories that show the connection between culture and climate change – from the challenges communities face and creative solutions they develop. \nYour story can help raise awareness\, inspire action\, and show how culture is not only at risk from climate change\, but also part of the solution. \nWhat stories are we looking for? \nClimate change is transforming the way people live\, celebrate\, remember\, and pass on their culture and heritage. Historic places are increasingly affected by floods\, heat\, fires\, and sea-level rise\, while living heritage – such as rituals\, crafts\, festivals\, and traditional knowledge – changes as environments and seasons shift. At the same time\, communities adapt\, innovate\, and draw on culture as a source of resilience and climate action. \nThrough this call\, UNESCO and ICHCAP seek personal\, experience-based stories that show how culture and climate change are connected in everyday life. Stories may include\, for example: \n\nA traditional festival or ritual that has changed due to extreme weather\nA heritage site or cultural space affected by climate-related disasters\nCultural practices that help communities adapt to environmental change\nTraditional knowledge used to build resilience or support sustainable living\n\nSubmissions should be rooted in your own experience and clearly highlight the challenges climate change poses to culture and/or the ways culture helps people respond and adapt. Selected submissions will be featured in UNESCO and ICHCAP’s awareness campaign on culture and climate action\, to be shared through online platforms and exhibitions. The submitters of selected submissions will receive a Certificate of Participation from the organizers. \nWho can participate? \nWe welcome submissions from community members\, youth and elders\, cultural bearers – anyone with a personal story to share. \nYou do not need to be a climate expert or heritage professional. We are looking for real experiences\, told in your own way. \nWhat can you submit? \nYou may submit one of the following formats: \n\nPhotographs: up to 5 images (JPG / JPEG / PNG\, high resolution)\nA short video (1–3 minutes\, with English subtitle\, audio narration in any language) Each submission must include a written narrative (maximum 300 words\, in English)\, explaining:\nSome information about yourself\nThe background of your work\nWhat it shows about culture and climate change\, adaptation\, or resilience\nWhen and where it takes place Minimal editing is encouraged to keep the work authentic.\n\nAll submissions must be your own. By submitting\, you agree that UNESCO may use selected works for awareness-raising and communication purposes related to its mandate. \nHow to submit \nEmail your submission to: beijing.culture@unesco.org \nDeadline: 15 March 2026 \nPlease include “Culture and Climate Story” in the subject line \nPlease click the link to learn how to submit the application form and read more information about the submission. \n
