SUMMARY:2nd International Conference on Cordillera Studies: “Indigenous Studies in the Philippines: Issues and Prospects”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract submission deadline: 6 February 2017 \nThe conference will address the general theme of “Indigenous Studies in the Philippines: Issues and Prospects.” Although special attention will be given to the study of indigenous societies in the Cordillera region of Northern Luzon\, the conference seeks to provide a broad platform for the discussion of other indigenous societies in the Philippines and elsewhere. The conference is thus envisioned as a venue for the presentation and discussion of comparative indigenous studies\, highlighting various theoretical approaches and methodologies within and across disciplines. \nThe conference aims to promote debate and identify directions on how Indigenous Studies\, as a distinct field of inquiry\, can be established and consolidated in the Philippines\, and to foster collaborative work between academics\, civil society\, and communities in the Northern Luzon Cordillera and elsewhere. \nProposals for individual papers and panels are now being accepted. Among the topics to be covered by the conference are: \n\nThe place of traditional narratives in historical reconstruction\nRepresentation of indigenous peoples in orthodox histories\nIndigenous peoples as configured in old and new ethnographies\nIndigenous rituals in contemporary times: persistence and change\nOral traditions and world views\nTraditional literature and literature beyond oral traditions\nIssues in the codification of indigenous languages\nThe indigenous in media\, literature\, visual arts and other cultural forms\nEndangered heritage and cultural preservation: issues and initiatives\nSovereignty and self-determination: resource management\, land claims\, economic development\nIndigenous knowledge/ indigenous science: ethnomathematics\, ethnobotany\, ethnoecology\nIndigenous concepts of health and wellness\nGender roles and issues: status of indigenous women; notions of indigenous masculinities\nThe indigenous in diaspora\nThe sacred: spirituality and religious experience in indigenous society\nIssues on indigenous peoples’ education\nStudying the indigenous: western/native frameworks and methodologies\nEthnic/Indigenous/Cordillera Studies: the formation of area studies\n\nProposals are not restricted to the topics listed above. Comparative studies and papers that contribute to the debate on theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of indigenous societies are especially welcome. \nIndividual paper presenters must submit a proposal containing (a) an abstract of not more than 250 words\, (b) proponent’s résumé\, and (c) contact details (institutional affiliation and mailing address\, e-mail address\, telephone numbers). Individual presentations should not exceed 20 minutes\, excluding time for questions. \nOrganized panels should consist of 3 to 4 paper readers. Proponents must submit a panel abstract of not more than 100 words\, in addition to separate proposals for each paper presentation (see requirements for individual paper proposals\, above). SUMMARY:National Human Rights Institutions in Southeast Asia: Challenges of Protection
DESCRIPTION:Deadline of Abstract Submission: 28 February 2017 \nAsia Centre invites the submission of abstracts on the role of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in Southeast Asia in protecting human rights. We welcome submissions from specialists in this field\, including by former and current practitioners in the region’s NHRIs. \nThe unique position of the NHRIs between the government and civil society provide opportunities and at the same time dilemmas in protecting human rights in the region. Their capacity to investigate human rights violations\, to conduct national inquiries or public hearings and to secure remedies for human rights victims are often questioned. \nThis conference aims to serve as a platform for representatives from NHRIs\, academics\, researchers\, students and civil society interested in the topic to explore\, through evidence based research\, the potentials\, challenges and opportunities of these Southeast Asian NHRIs and their contribution to human rights protection in the region.
