SUMMARY:Exhibition "Stand for Democracy in Myanmar"
DESCRIPTION:Since 1 February 2021\, Myanmar has been in turmoil as the Myanmar Army\, known as the Tatmadaw\, detained State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint following a general election which Suu Kyi’s NLD party won by a landslide. The coup d’état led by General Min Aung Hlaing brought an end to a decade of semi-democratic rule and returned full power to the military\, a state of emergency and gross human rights abuses. Courageously\, the population has been resisting and demanding the release of the imprisoned leaders\, as well as a booming number of prisoners and the restoration of democratic rule. A massive Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) has emerged and hundreds of thousands continue to take to the streets in spite of the military’s use of lethal force against protesters. Amidst the failure of the international community to take action\, atrocities are being committed on an increasing scale\, with the opposition National Unity Government (NUG) in exile resorting to form the People Defense Force and justify armed resistance. As of 15 March 2022\, 1672 people are confirmed killed by the junta coup and a total of 9625 people are currently under detention. In total\, 84 people are sentenced to death\, in person and absentia\, including two children. \nIn the midst of global worries\, it is more crucial than ever to keep Myanmar on the public agenda. In solidarity with the democratic movement in Myanmar\, SEA Junction and Human Rights Art Initiative (HuRAI)\, with the support of Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) and Asia Democracy Network (ADN)\, are therefore organizing the exhibition “Stand for Democracy in Myanmar” on the 3rd floor of Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC) from 26 April to 8 May 2022. The thirteen artworks are produced by Marcelo Brodsky\, an Argentine artist who advocates visual narratives through photography\, installations\, monuments\, and work that combines text and images. Images of the demonstrations against the coup during the Myanmar Spring triggered him to create work in solidarity with the protesters\, creating a visual experience for larger groups to engage—aestheticising the snapshots from the demonstrations\, leaving resulting effects for mobilization. He activates personal and collective memory\, communicating a message of resistance hoping to connect people across time and space\, ending up working at the crossroads between visual art\, poetry\, and human rights activism. \nStand for Democracy in Myanmar leverages visual art to raise public awareness of and to express solidarity with the cause of the civil movement in Myanmar and their struggle for freedom\, democracy and human rights. The exhibition at the BACC is part of a larger program of art shows and events at art institutions and museums around the globe which mobilize visual artists in support of the CDM and the democratically mandated NUG. Brodsky’s artworks have been exposed at the Tokyo Institute of Photography\, Kunsthall 3\,14 (Bergen\, Norway) and most recently at Photobastei (Zurich\, Switzerland). \nThe exhibition "Stand for Democracy in Myanmar" will be launched with an event on 26 April 2022 at 5:30-7:00 pm on the 3 rd floor of BACC\, where the exhibition is held. The artist will be joined by other speakers\, as listed below\, to discuss the importance of mobilizing for democracy through a medium of art. Co-culture Ensemble and the Myanmar Students Community in Thailand will also perform live traditional and classical music. Following that\, Burmese food and drinks will be served. \nSpeakers: \n\nMarcelo Brodsky\, Exhibiting Artist\nKeiko Sei\, Writer and Curator\nPhil Robertson\, Deputy Director of Asia Division\, Human Rights Watch\n\nModerator: \n\nRosalia Sciortino\, Founder and Executive Director\, SEA Junction\n\n \n \nArtist \nMarcelo Brodsky (1954) lives and works in Buenos Aires\, Argentina. SUMMARY:New Chinese Migrants in Thailand
DESCRIPTION:SEA Junction in collaboration with IPSR In-House Seminar and Mahidol Migration Centre (MMC) has launched a series of bi-monthly events entitled ‘Wednesday SEA Mobilities’\, starting in February 2022. The last Wednesday of every two months we will jointly hold seminars or panels discussing vast arrays of current Southeast Asia’s mobility issues by experts\, academics\, practitioners\, NGO workers\, migrants\, and people from the fields. \nOur second Wednesday SEA Mobility’s event on 27 April 2022 at 10.30-11.30 am will be a presentation by Aranya Siriphon on New Chinese Migrants in Thailand. The online event will be broadcast on Zoom at https://bit.ly/WEDNESDAY-SEA-MOBILITIES and also on the FB pages of IPSR and of SEA Junction. \nAranya Siriphon is Visiting Fellow at Regional Social and Cultural Studies Programme at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. She is also Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, Faculty of Social Sciences\, Chiang Mai University. Her presentation will be based on the paper submitted to ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute which can be found here and below is a brief abstract. \nAbstract \nXin yimin\, literally mean ‘new migrant’\, refers to the new wave of skilled and urban migrants from China to Thailand after 2000s onward. Differentiated from new Chinese migrants who migrated to Southeast Asia and particularly to Thailand during 1990s-2000s\, Chinese emigration emerged today is much more a form of class consumption\, a strategic class reproduction that transforms economic capital into social status and prestige\, rather than the previous migration for economic production. \nThe dynamic rise of China and the rapid economic growth associated with Chinese state influences\, global flows of digital technology and transportation\, and neoliberal contexts have fortunately supported the emerging migration trend. The new migrants’ aspiration and desire\, seen as part of driving force\, are involved in aiming to improve a better quality of life through outmigration for education\, business\, marriage\, residential tourism and lifestyle. \nSince the 2000s\, many have been moving into Southeast Asia. In Thailand\, their number has doubled in the last two decades. The new Chinese migration to Thailand today is of a more transient nature\, a circulatory transnational migration seen as an unfinished set of fluid movements engaging in between the homeland and various host countries. Under the characteristic of migration trend\, these new Chinese migrants to Thailand can be classified into four groups: The first consists of people who migrate for business and economic activities; China is the third largest investor in Thailand\, mainly in the manufacturing sector\, with Bangkok as the favored location. It also includes members of the staff working for official or private institutes\, voluntary teachers\, and professional freelancers. The second consists of individuals who migrate for education purposes\, at all levels. Tertiary level students usually enroll in private institutions\, mainly in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The third consists of people migrating for a lifestyle change. Tourists fall under this category since some tend to eventually migrate to Thailand after being enamored by its lifestyle and culture. The fourth refers to migrants of the above categories who move on to engage in ecommerce businesses\, selling Thai products and international brands to Chinese customers. \n \nPlease contact us at southeastasiajunction@gmail.com or phone: +66970024140 for information. \nOrganizers \nSEA Junction \nSEA Junction\, established under the Thai non-profit organization Foundation for Southeast Asia Studies (ForSEA)\, aims to foster understanding and appreciation of Southeast Asia in all its socio-cultural dimensions\, from arts and lifestyles to economy and development.
