SUMMARY:26th #WhatsHappeninginMyanmar Monthly Updates
DESCRIPTION:On 14 December 2022 at 3-4 pm (Bangkok Time)\, SEA Junction in collaboration with Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR) will hold the 26th #WhatsHappeninginMyanmar Monthly Updates. This update series was started soon after the coup d’état in Myanmar with the aim to contribute to a greater understanding of the crisis situation there for informed action in support of the democratic movement in the country and beyond. \nSince February 2021\, Myanmar has been in turmoil as the Myanmar Army\, known as Tatmadaw\, detained State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint following a general election which Suu Kyi’s NLD party won by a landslide. The coup by General Min Aung Hlaing brought an end to a decade of semi-democratic rule and returned full power to the military. Courageously\, the population has been resisting and demanding the release of the imprisoned leaders and restoration of the democratic rule and the National Unity Government (NUG) has been formed by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH)\, a group of elected lawmakers and members of parliament ousted in the coup. Economic collapse amid escalating conflict is making of Myanmar a failed state\, with many leaving the country in search of refuge and opportunities. The global community has overall condemned the coup and the military abuses\, but concerted diplomatic interventions are still too bland. After more than one year of the coup\, ASEAN has been excluding Tatmadaw representatives from their summits\, but still fails to recognize NUG as the legitimate representative of Myanmar. While the future of the country is in the hands of its people\, international and regional bodies ought to isolate the military junta\, ban arms\, embargo business by the militaries and their cronies\, address gross violations of international human rights and humanitarian law and provide humanitarian relief to the population. \nThe updates are meant to be short informal dialogues with a speaker who provides an analysis of the latest events in the preceding two weeks for about 20 minutes before the moderator\, SEA Junction’s Founder and Director Rosalia Sciortino\, opens the floor for questions and answers. Initially the updates were held bi-weekly and lasted from March 2021 to March 2022 with speakers Aung Zaw\, Founder and Director Irrawaddy; Khin Ohmar\, a well-known Peace and Security Advocate; Debbie Stothard\, an active promoter of human rights in Burma and the ASEAN regions; and May Zin Thaw\, the founder of a local think tank institute Researchers’ Republic. After few months of break to evaluate the series\, we feel there is still an urgent need to keep Myanmar on the public agenda in the midst of many other global worries as the situation continues to worsen in the country. The now-monthly updates are going to restart with one of our previous resource persons Khin Ohmar who has been much appreciated by the public for her comprehensive reviews of the evolving situation. \nTo participate\, turn in for the monthly update planned for 14 December 2022 at 3-4 pm (Bangkok Time) via Zoom (Link: http://bit.ly/Zoom-SEAJunction) and Facebook Live on our page: SEA Junction. \nSpeaker Profile: \nKhin Ohmar is an experienced peace and security advocate from Myanmar. For the past 30 years\, she has worked with fellow Burmese democracy activists as well as with ethnic women and youth from conflict-affected areas in Myanmar\, including Kachin\, Karen\, Lahu and Rohingya. In 2008\, Ms. Ohmar won the Anna Lindh Prize\, awarded annually to a woman or young person with “the courage to fight indifference\, prejudice\, oppression and injustices in order to promote a good life for all people in an environment marked by respect for human rights.” She also won the 2008 Vital Voices Global Leadership Award for Human Rights\, which she shared with Shan Women’s Action Network activist Charm Tong and the Young Women’s Peace Award (Democracy Today) in 2018. \n(Photo: CJ) \nOrganizers: \nSEA Junction \nSEA Junction\, established under the Thai non-profit organization Foundation for Southeast Asia Studies (ForSEA)\, aims to foster understanding and appreciation of Southeast Asia in all its socio-cultural dimensions\, from arts and lifestyles to economy and development. SUMMARY:Book Launch & Panel Discussion "LGBTQI Digital Media Activism and Counter-hate Speech"
DESCRIPTION:LGBTQI Digital Media Activism and Counter-hate Speech: Experiences from Asia and Europe \nAs media are rapidly evolving\, social movements and activists are increasingly taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the wide range of communication tools and platforms to organize their networks\, form collective identities and develop new languages of resistance to counteract anti-gender and homophobic discourse. \nRendering visible LGBTQI cultural resistance\, expressed through digital media activism and counter-hate discourse is of utmost importance not just in Italy but also in Asia and globally. Invisibility and the symbolic annihilation of LGBTQI people in media and popular discourse have historically signified powerlessness for LGBTQI people\, and have also contributed to the dissemination of harmful misrepresentations of gender and LGBTQI identities\, promoting negative stereotyping\, increasing prejudices\, hate\, discrimination and homophobia\, also leading to direct physical violence in many cases. These attitudes are fully embodied and expressed by actors mobilizing nationally and transnationally in anti-gender countermovements. \nTech firms such as Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube face growing scrutiny for hate speech and misinformation. They have not invested enough in developing countries\, and lack moderators with language skills and knowledge of local events. The result is that hate speech and abuse\, particularly in local languages\, often goes unchecked and local communities are disregarded\, potentially increasing polarization and risk of violence. This was the case of Indonesia\, where significant online hate speech has targeted religious and racial minority groups\, as well as LGBTQ people\, with bots and paid trolls spreading disinformation aimed at deepening divisions. \nCommunication is central to activism and resistance. While a great amount of scholarship has been invested in studying anti-gender mobilizations and their violent and trauma-generating discourses\, the book that will be presented during this event and the organized panel discussion\, will shift the attention on LGBTQI social movements and their digital media activism and non-violent communication practices\, sharing experiences from Asia and Europe\, which often are unheard of.  \nYou’re cordially invited to join the event\, with a panel discussion followed by a cocktail reception and book signing on 14 December 2022\, 18:00-19:30 at SEA Junction\, 4th Floor\, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). The panel is composed of: \nModerator: \n\nSriprapha Petcharamesree\, Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies\, Mahidol University\n\nSpeakers \n\nSara Gabai\, Author and Communication Expert\nEmilie Palamy Pradichit\, Founder and Executive Director\, Manushya Foundation\, Thailand\nHenry Koh\, Executive Director\, ILGA Asia (on line)\n\nThe Book is available in all main e-stores including: Amazon  I  Book Depository  I  Google Play \nLimited copies will also be available at SEA Junction during the event. \nShort Bios Moderator and Speakers \nDr. Sriprapha Petcharamesree is the former Director of the Ph.D. Program in Human Rights and Peace Studies (International) of the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies at Mahidol University in Thailand.
