SUMMARY:Photo Exhibition “The Deep Places in the Deep South”
DESCRIPTION:Thailand’s southern border provinces of Pattani\, Yala\, and Narathiwat— an area predominantly inhabited by Malay-Muslim people—have been experiencing continuous violence. More than 13\,000 people have been injured\, and the death toll has surpassed 7\,200 from the more than 21\,000 violent incidents that have occurred in the region during the last 19 years. The enforcement of three special laws to control the crisis have not resolved the conflict and instead led to violations of the human rights of people living in the area. \nThe prolonged conflict has also fostered a perception of the region as a hotbed of danger\, not only in the eyes of the Thai state but also among citizens in other regions. Yet in the midst of challenging circumstances\, “ordinary” people continue to lead their lives\, carry out their daily tasks\, and navigate the challenges posed by the conflict live\, perform their daily tasks and manage to cope with conflict. The photo project by Yostorn Triyos focuses on this “parallel reality\,” employing photography as a tool to narrate the way of life and culture of people in the area. Supported by Minority Rights Group International and co-funded by the European Union\, the project incorporates anthropological and sociological dimensions through the lens of the “Living Room\,” which functions as both a cultural and spiritual space\, reflecting the identity of the Malay ethnic group in the three southern border provinces. \nOrganized by SEA Junction in collaboration with Realframe\, the photo exhibition “The Deep Places in the Deep South” is scheduled to take place on 19 September – 1 October 2023 on the curved wall\, 4th floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). The exhibition raises questions about the outsiders’ view of this region and its population as “troublesome” and “diverse”. His focus lies in capturing people\, utilizing his lens to bring their stories to the forefront with a distinct and empathetic perspective. SUMMARY:งานเสวนาเปิดนิทรรศการ “The Deep Places in the Deep South”
