SUMMARY:Panel Discussions for MAEW
DESCRIPTION:Event Background \nIn the name of tackling the climate crisis\, we are witnessing a stepped up effort led by powerful corporate and state interests to designate still free-flowing stretches of rivers as new sites for hydropower dam build-out and vast areas of land as open for extraction of ‘transition’/’critical’ minerals. When community members and their allies raise questions and defend collective rights to ancestral lands\, water\, clean air and livelihood\, authorities across the region have responded with force – ranging from militarization\, weaponization of vague laws to criminalize\, incarcerate and even forcibly disappear outspoken leaders\, and ordering the effective closure of civil society groups. In this context\, what are ways we can strategically leverage efforts to push back against impunity for such attacks\, hold institutions accountable\, demand redress and assert that continuing such a pattern of crackdowns is both unacceptable and intolerable? Discussants will bring forward a range of perspectives\, from engaging in regional and global arenas to community-based organizing. This event is hosted by International Rivers and is a part of the MEAW 2024. \nSince its inception in 2019\, MAEW has brought together diverse groups\, networks\, and mechanisms to address critical regional issues from environment to democracy\, climate justice\, agriculture\, and food sovereignty. Topics like free trade agreements\, the Belt and Road Initiative\, and Special Economic Zones have also been discussed\, alongside the climate crisis\, waste management\, and the ecosystems of the Mekong and Salween Rivers. \nMAEW is committed to highlighting problems and driving discussions on prevention and solutions\, particularly those raised by local communities. Their event unites progressive voices across the region to tackle common\, cross-border challenges created by dominant ideologies\, economic models\, and powerful actors. To date\, MAEW has hosted over 200 speakers and artists\, engaging thousands of participants each year in meaningful exploration\, dialogue and creative expression. \nThis year\, MAEW will once again bring together the diverse groups and networks of international and local stakeholders and participants from around the Greater Mekong Subregion to Bangkok\, from 24 – 29 September 2024 for the Annual Mekong Environmental Awareness Week which will be hosted across different locations. SEA Junction has the pleasure of being a venue to host 5 discussion panels across three days as follows: \n27 September 2024: \n\nPanel discussion “Land and Forests: Special Economic Zones\, Transnational Capital\, and Land Grabbing.”\n\nTime: 13.30 – 16.00 (Afternoon Session)\nSpeakers: Pornpana Kueycharoen (Land Watch Thai) and Somnuck Chongmeewasin (Eastern Economic Corridor Development Study Group – EEC Watch)\nOrganizers: MAEW and SEA Junction in partnership with Land Watch Thai and EEC Watch\n\n\n\n\nPanel Discussion “Strategizing Collective Responses to Intensified Attacks on Defenders of Rights to Land\, Water and Livelihood: Local Site-Based Struggles and Beyond”\n\nTime: 18:00 – 19:30 (Evening Session)\nOrganizers: MAEW and SEA Junction in partnership with International Rivers\n\n\n\n28 September 2024: \n\nPanel discussion “Mekong Dams\, River Crisis\, and Future Solutions: Can Science Help?”\n\nTime: 10.00 – 12.30 (Morning Session)\nSpeakers: Kolatat Phaiboonnukulkit (RIFFAI Project -Remote Information Future Forecast Artificial Intelligence Project)\, Thitipan Pattanamongkol (The Feature Magazine – Sarakadee)\nOrganizers: MAEW and SEA Junction in partnership with Ubon Monitoring Group on Flood and Mekong Dams (UMFD)\n\n\n\n\nPanel discussion “International Financial Institutions: Investment in Southeast Asia”\n\nTime: 14.00 – 15.30 (Afternoon Session)\nSpeakers: To be announced\nOrganizers: MAEW and SEA Junction in partnership with Accountability Counsel\n\n\n\n29 September 2024: \n\nPanel discussion “THAI BAHT-MYANMAR GAS: The Neighbor’s talk”\n\nTime: 10.00 – 12.00 (Morning Session)\nSpeakers: To be announced\nOrganizers: MAEW and SEA Junction in partnership with ETOs Watch\n\n\n\n \nFor more information/reservation\, please contact us at info@seajunction.org or message us in any social media channel. \nOrganizers \nInternational Rivers protects rivers and defends the rights of communities that depend on them. SUMMARY:Photo Exhibition “Not Just Labor; Migrant Photo Voices from Thailand’s Fisheries”
DESCRIPTION:Globally\, trade in fish products continues to reach record highs\, and developing countries now contribute over half of the value of total exports. Within this expanding world market\, Thailand has emerged as a major supplier\, with the value of its seafood exports reaching US$6 billion in recent years. A significant contribution to the industry’s growth is given by the migrant labor force. Shortages of Thai workers willing to work on fishing vessels\, emerging simultaneously with expanding structural differences in population demographics and economic development between Thailand and its neighboring countries\, have transformed fishing crews to predominantly consist of migrant workers from Cambodia and Myanmar. Several hundred thousand women and men migrant workers are now employed at different levels within the seafood supply chain in Thailand\, working precariously under various temporary labor migration regimes and constrained living and work conditions. \nRecognizing the contribution of migrant workers to Thai’s society and the blue economy\, the exhibition “Not Just Labor; Migrant Photo Voices from Thailand Fisheries” gives them a platform to showcase their photo voices. The display consists of photos taken on their mobile phone by migrants from Cambodia and Myanmar\, who are now living in Phuket\, Phang Nga and Chanthaburi to work in the fishing and seafood industry. \nThe displayed photo-stories capture the migrant’s overall day-to-day existence full of taxing\, entertaining or simply mundane events\, of interaction with their natural and social surroundings\, and of dreams and expectations about the future. The message the photo voices (and the exhibition’s title) convey\, is that migrants are more than just labor and more than the sum of the difficulties and exploitation endured. Against the dehumanized portrayal of migrants as faceless ‘others’\, this exhibition celebrates their identity\, agency\, personality and other features of our shared humanity. Moreover the exhibition show that migrant lives have become interconnected with the larger Thai society demanding more suitable integration policies for migrants. This comprehensive appreciation of migrants’ experiences and aspirations\, is essential to create an inclusive and more equitable society that upholds everyone’s human dignity. \nThe exhibition\, curated by Sayan Chuenudomsavad\, Rosalia Scortino and Chawin Chantalikit and organized by SEA Junction with support of the International Labour Organization (ILO)’s Ship to Shore Rights South East Asia initiative funded by the European Union was first exhibited this May at the 4th Floor Curved Wall at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)\, then moved at the Bangkok United Nations Conference Centre as part of the 12th University Scholars Leadership Symposium organized by UNESCAP last August and now the presented to the public eyes again at the BACC pop•up\, Gallery 1 at Mun Mun Art Destination (MMAD)\, 3rd floor\, Seacon Square Srinakarin 28 September to 27 October. \n \n  \nFor more information\, please email: info@seajunction.org or phone/wa: +66970024140 \nOrganizers: \nSEA Junction\, established under the Thai non-profit organization Foundation for Southeast Asia Studies (ForSEA)\, aims to foster understanding and appreciation of Southeast Asia in all its socio-cultural dimensions\, from arts and lifestyles to economy and development.
