SUMMARY:Exhibition “Cartooning the ASEAN Way of Non-Interference and Consensus”
DESCRIPTION:SEA Junction\, in collaboration with Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR)\, will hold the Exhibition “Cartooning the ASEAN Way of Non-Interference and Consensus” from 22 October to 3 November 2024 at the Curved Wall\, 4th floor (Comics Exhibition) and Corner Space\, 1st floor (Cartoons Exhibitions)\, Bangkok Art and Culture Center to reflect on the future of the role of ASEAN in addressing current and emerging issues in the region. On the 4th floor\, comics are displayed\, while cartoons are showcased on the first floor. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic\, the coup in Myanmar and autocratic changes in other member states\, unresolved geo-political tensions and recessionary pressures have brought attention towards ASEAN\, prompting crucial questions on whether it is fulfilling or failing to fulfill its role\, and have put a spotlight on regional development and interaction. With growing questions on whether ASEAN is indeed people-oriented as it claims in its Charter and “for whom” and whose interests ASEAN is acting\, there is an urgency to promote public discussion on the so-called “ASEAN Way” and particularly on the two core institutional principles of “Consensus” and “Non-Interference”. \nBoth concepts are today under discussion. Consensus has been seen as playing a positive role in fostering unity among the diverse members\, yet it has often delayed response\, with some arguing in favor of changing the rule to a majority one to enhance effectiveness. Likewise\, the Non-Interference principle is deemed to have given a positive contribution to stop unduly interferences and promote respect “for the independence\, sovereignty\, equality\, territorial integrity\, and national identity of all nations” as stated in ASEAN’s Treaty of Amenity. However\, amid a worsening human rights crisis in the region especially in Myanmar and emerging transnational threats\, ASEAN has failed to provide protection of its people and ensure the respect of their human rights by appealing to this same principle. \nThe aim of this exhibition is to highlight how creativity can help highlight  complex issues for a general public and to promote a critical understanding of ASEAN and its Consensus and Non-Interference principles. Cartoons and comics combine textual and visual elements to express critical thinking and create narratives\, balancing humor with seriousness. The comics and cartoons from various participants across Southeast Asia vividly also portray the role of ASEAN through engaging visual elements. We trust that in this way they can draw attention to regional governance and trigger a conversation on steps needed in realizing a people-oriented ASEAN. \nThis exhibition consists of the artwork of the winners of the Cartoons and Comics Competition “Cartooning the ASEAN Way of Non-Interference and Consensus” held by SEA Junction in collaboration with AJAR in early 2024 as well as selected artworks from other participants in both the cartoons and the comics categories. SUMMARY:46th #WhatsHappeninginMyanmar Monthly Updates
DESCRIPTION:On 29 October 2024 at 5-6pm (Bangkok Time)\, SEA Junction in collaboration with Asia Justice and Rights (AJAR)\, with media partners\, Mizzima and The Irrawady\, will hold the 46th #WhatsHappeninginMyanmar Monthly Updates. This update series was started soon after the coup d’état in Myanmar with the aim of contributing to a greater understanding of the crisis situation there for informed action in support of the democratic movement in the country and beyond. \nSince February 2021\, Myanmar has been in turmoil as the Myanmar Army\, known as Tatmadaw\, detained State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint following a general election which Suu Kyi’s NLD party won by a landslide. The coup by General Min Aung Hlaing brought an end to a decade of semi-democratic rule and returned full power to the military. Courageously\, the population has been resisting and demanding the release of the imprisoned leaders and restoration of the democratic rule and the National Unity Government (NUG) has been formed by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH)\, a group of elected lawmakers and members of parliament ousted in the coup. Economic collapse amid escalating conflict is making of Myanmar a failed state\, with many leaving the country in search of refuge and opportunities. The global community has overall condemned the coup and the military abuses\, but concerted diplomatic interventions are still too bland. After more than three years of the coup\, ASEAN has been excluding Tatmadaw representatives from their summits\, but still fails to recognize NUG as the legitimate representative of Myanmar. While the future of the country is in the hands of its people\, international and regional bodies ought to isolate the military junta\, ban arms\, embargo business by the militaries and their cronies\, address gross violations of international human rights and humanitarian law and provide humanitarian relief to the population. Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs) are taking control strategically important areas in Kachin\, Kayah\, Chin\, Rakhine and Shan after 1027 operations led by Three Brotherhood Alliance: the Arakan Army (AA)\, Myanmar National Democrative Alliance Army (MNDAA) and Ta’ang National Army (TNLA) \nThe update aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the crisis situation in Myanmar for informed action in support of the democratic movement in the country and beyond. It is meant to be short informal dialogues with a speaker who provides an analysis of the latest events in the preceding two weeks for about 20 minutes before the moderator\, SEA Junction’s Founder and Director Rosalia Sciortino\, opens the floor for questions and answers.
