Dear Partners and Friends of SEA Junction,

October promises to be a busy month for SEA Junction. We are very proud to present a series of 4 eye-opening exhibitions on different facets of Southeast Asia.

Starting from the current exhibition focusing on the contradictory history of Cambodia between “War and Beauty” we move to a parallel world with BKK Comics Art Festival #2, the second of an annual event to bring attention to this special art, featuring both prominent and emerging artists. We then delve into the biased world of #manels or all-men panel and examine the causes as well as the impacts of this phenomena excluding women from the public arena. Finally the last exhibition is special since it brings together six photographers from around the region and their striking work to highlight the COVID-19 pandemic’s disproportionate health and economic impacts on disadvantaged people, which can still be felt to this day.
For more detailed information about each event, please refer to the section below. You may have noticed that this month we are not presenting regular events such as the Monthly Mini Book Fair and the Myanmar Updates to concentrate fully on the exhibitions with our small staff. But be assured we will be back next month!

We hope you will continue to find our program of interest. We count on your participation and help in sharing the information about our programs with your network. And, if you would like to support us, please click on the donation box below.

Best regards,
Lia Sciortino Sumaryono

SEA-Junction, 4th floor, BACC

Organized by Ophidian in collaboration with SEA Junction, the Photo Exhibition “Cambodia: War and Beauty” by David A. Feingold aims to showcase the cultural survival of the Cambodian people. The themes of the photos, taken over a period of more than 40 years, include war and its impact on the land and people, the ongoing impact of landmines on the people and land of Cambodia, the toll they take, and the courage and skill that are needed to remove them. The exhibition will be on display from 3-15 October 2023, 3rd floor, BACC. Taken by David A. Feingold, the photographer who dedicated his life for over six decades in Cambodia, the exhibition offers images of Cambodia’s historical transition and the layer of Cambodian cultural survival from war, the rise of the Khmer Rouge, to the restoration of the Kingdom.

Manel Exhibition
17-29 October 2023, 10:00am – 8:00pm at 4th Floor, BACC

SEA Junction in collaboration with the Women’s League of Burma and Salween Institute will hold the “Manel Exhibition: Where Are the Women?” on 17-19 October 2023 on the curved wall, 4th floor of BACC.

Women’s voices continue to be underrepresented, if not denied, in government institutions and processes, as well as in the public and academic arena. In spite of significant progress in fostering gender equity globally, patriarchal norms remain deeply entrenched in society and continue to manifest themselves in multiple forms. One of these seemingly innocuous, but actually pernicious forms, is the proliferation of "manels," i.e., all-male panels, and their denialof women as subject-matter experts. The exhibition, previously held in Chiang Mai in March 2023, will display a collection of manel events and highlighted manelists, manel organizers and donors or funders who supported those events. These will include manels in Myanmar and in other Southeast Asian countries. It will also showcase artworks in form of illustration and comic that relate to the topic.

Photo Exhibition Who Cares? COVID-19 Divides in Southeast Asia
17-29 October 2023, 10:00 am – 8:00 pm,Curved Wall, 3rd floor, BACC

The photo exhibition “Who Cares? COVID-19 Divides in Southeast Asia”— organized by SEA Junction on 17-29 October and displayed at the 3 rd Floor’s Curved Wall of the Bangkok Arts and Culture Center (BACC)—documents how the pandemic in Southeast Asia laid bare the entrenched wealth and welfare inequities in society and their diverse implications for the well-being and safety of the various segments of the population as well as the differentiated social protection responses to the crisis.

Photographers from six countries, Edy Susanto for Indonesia, Hasnoor Hussain for Malaysia, Tanwe (pseudonym) for Myanmar, Kimberly dela Cruz for the Philippines, Grace Baey for Singapore, and Sayan Chuenudomsavad for Thailand highlight how pre-existing inequities have resulted in a disproportionately large toll being taken on disadvantaged groups and in greater constraints and reduced protections for these same groups.

During the exhibition, two related events are planned at SEA Junction as follows:

  • 18 October, 5.30-7pm: Photographer Talk on which the photographers will discuss their work during the pandemic.
  • 25 October 5.30-7pm: Book Launch of the Thai language version of the recently published book “Who Cares? COVID-19 Social Protection Response in Southeast Asia” edited by SEA Junction’s founder Rosalia Sciortino, published by Silkworm Books and illustrated with selected exhibition photos. The launch will present a panel focused on the book’s chapter on Thailand and discuss lessons that can be drawn from the COVID-19 social protection response that are of relevance to current policy discussions on elderly welfare and e-wallets aid for the overall population.
