Book Discussion “A History of the Thai-Chinese” by Jeffery Sng

18 October, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

“A History of the Thai-Chinese”, written by Singaporean former diplomat Jeffrey Sng and his wife Pimpraphai Bisalputra brings to life the rich stories and legends of the Thai-Chinese. This community has had a tremendous impact on Siamese history and modern-day Thailand well beyond Bangkok’s thriving Chinatown. Many modern Thai leaders, including prime ministers, high-ranking officials and business leaders, are ethnic Chinese and of Chinese lineage and Sino-Thai influence is palpable in the spheres of politics, culture and economics.

Through interviews with descendants of prominent family members, research into family records, oral reports and other sources, the authors explore the impressive contribution of the Sino-Thai community as the largest and most powerful minority in the country and its relationship with the majority population and the Thai State throughout history.

The book is of particular relevance these days amidst the growing discussion in Thailand as well as in the region about the role of the Chinese diaspora and their relationship to China in the context of Chin’s growing economic and political clouts. With the awareness that the future of Thailand and Southeast Asia is interlinked with China, dormant anti-Chinese sentiments are re-emerging boosted by the strengthening of nationalist movements. To better understand the current situation as shaped from recent developments and past history, SEA Junction will hold a book discussion with co-author Jeffrey Sng on 18 October at 6PM. At the discussion, the author will present his book and discuss the migration patterns of the Chinese and its consequences on Thai society from the past until now. There will also be limited copies of the book available for sale and be will be glad to sign them if so desired.
