Screening and Discussion “Calalai: In-Betweenness”

9 April, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Recently transgender women and men have received unprecedented attention in the West: celebrity trans* people like Caitlyn Jenner, the controversy of the bathroom bills in some American states and recognition of legal genders other than female and male, are daily fare in the media. Even mainstream publications like National Geographic and Time publish special issues on the “gender revolution.”

But other cultures have, since time immemorial, recognized multiple, non-binary genders, such as the five genders known in Indonesia’s Bugis culture in South Sulawesi. The Bugis’ main epic, La Galigo, supposedly the longest classical text, mentions and honors all these genders in their respective profane and sacred roles.

“Calalai: In-Betweenness” is a documentary which captures women who engage with masculinities in thinking, behavior and spirituality and mysticism.

South-East Asia Junction (SEA Junction) is proud to hold a screening of the film on Sunday, 9 April 2017, from 17:30 to 19:00 hours. A discussion with Indonesian gay activist and academic, Dédé Oetomo, and Thai lesbian activist, Anjana Tang Suvarnananda, will follow.
