Dear Partners and Friends of SEA Junction,

This September signs the start of a series of major exhibitions that will last till the end of the year, with the first two exploring the deepening conflict in Southern Thailand. To mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances at the end of August, an exhibition of body maps painted by victims of violence and their relatives makes visible inner trauma and ongoing efforts to foster healing. This vision of pain is contrasted with a successive photo exhibition, in which the day-to-day life of people in the South in the quiet of their homes amidst conflict is portrayed.

Beyond Thailand, we look at regional trends like digital control and surveillance by Southeast Asian states and we reflect on the future of Southeast Asia with an innovative initiative. To commemorate the 56th Anniversary of the ASEAN establishment, we have launched with the JFK Foundation the written and visual essay competition “Which Road for Southeast Asia?” taking the title from an essay by former foreign minister and deputy prime minister of Thailand Thanat Khoman at the forming of this regional bloc to offer an opportunity to youth in the region to reflect on current and future regional developments.

Finally, we remain committed to keeping Myanmar in the spotlight through the #WhatsHappeninginMyanmar Monthly Updates and our ongoing Living the Coup initiative, offering insights into the current daily challenges in Myanmar after the coup. The most recent story on the impacts of the conflict on families on painted postcards by Chuu Wai can be read at this link.
