Call for Papers: 21st Cornell SEAP Graduate Student Conference, “Conformities and Interruptions in Southeast Asia”

14 December, 2018 - 15 December, 2018

Abstracts due by: December 15, 2018

Conference dates: March 8-10, 2019

Conformities allude to laws, guidelines, and systems of political, cultural, and economic power that govern the lives of individuals and communities. What evident or overlooked conformities exist in the histories and contemporary issues of Southeast Asia? Conversely, the concept of interruptions offers a means to uncover non-conformities — individual and collective acts that subvert expectations. What systems or perspectives are challenged via processes of interruption? In Southeast Asian contexts interruptions might occur through performative or bodily acts, disturbances of socio-cultural boundaries, or subtle variations in physical and spatial environments. Yet, conformity and interruption can speak at multiple levels, from interpersonal to international and within/across collectives that don’t adhere to national boundaries. What do moments of interruption reveal about conformity? Do they always undermine each other? Or can they be paired as tactics of intervention? Finally, what conformities might be present in the various disciplinary studies of Southeast Asia, and how can they be interrupted?

The Cornell University Southeast Asia Program’s 21st Annual Graduate Student Conference is inviting submissions that engage these questions. The conference will be held March 8-10, 2019 at the Kahin Center for Advanced Research on Southeast Asia in Ithaca, New York.

We welcome submissions of abstracts by December 15th, 2018 from graduate students who have completed original research related to Southeast Asia. The symposium invites a range of papers from different fields that speak broadly and creatively to the dynamic of “Conformities and Interruptions.” Our intention is to reflect the dynamic research currently undertaken by graduate students across the globe on Southeast Asia. The Cornell Southeast Asia Program’s Graduate Committee will review the abstracts, select presenters, and organize panels by theme. In order to aid the process of thematic organization, we ask that you please include a few keywords summarizing your presentation along with your abstract.

Selected contributors will present their work as part of a panel, and paper abstracts will be included in the conference program. All the panels will have discussants, therefore presenters should be prepared to submit full papers of 5000-8000 words by February 15, 2019.

A very limited number of modest travel allowances may be available for those traveling longer distances. We encourage applicants to seek funding from their home institutions first. Please indicate along with your abstract whether you expect to receive travel funding from your home institution and if you would like to be considered for a travel allowance from the Cornell Southeast Asia Program Graduate Student Committee. We will be in touch in February to coordinate graduate student host lodging for confirmed presenters. In the spirit of collegiate engagement, all presenters are expected to attend the entire conference.

Please submit abstracts to the following email address: seapgatty@cornell.edu

All abstracts should be limited to 250 words and sent in MS Word format. Do not send a PDF. Please name your abstract using your first and last name together (for example, janedoe.doc for Jane Doe’s abstract) The subject of the message should specify “Abstract” and the body of the email should include the following information:
