Lecture on Informal Architecture in South East Asian Cities by Paco Garcia (Closed Event)
26 April, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Urban centers in developing countries are generally covered by an amalgamation of informal structures and building extensions.
What are the legal implications of such structures? What standards should architects and planners adopt in regard to issues such as fire safety, heritage preservation and aesthetic value? Do their design priorities respond to subsistence needs or are they driven by cultural factors or dictated by specific standards? Does informal architecture signal the failure of commercial developers to deliver context-responsive habitats?
These questions will be the focus of a presentation on 26 April at 5 PM organized by the Bangkok Social Research Network. The speaker, Paco Garcia, has researched for the past two and a half years the emergence of informal architecture in a number of cities in South East Asia with the aim of building a regional-wide understanding of the forces behind these construction practices.
