Report Launch “Trump and the Asia-Pacific: The Persistence of American Unilateralism”

There is a lot of discussion in various fora about the role of China in Asia and the world, but increasingly less of other powerful global forces. The report launch organized by SEA Junction in collaboration with Focus on the Global South on 6 March at 6PM instead takes a look at the economic and strategic relationship of the US with the region. Entitled “Trump and the Asia-Pacific: The Persistence of American Unilateralism”, the report argues that unilateralism has been the dominant manner in which the US has asserted its military and political interests and that it has reached the apex with the Trump administration. Disengagement has become most destabilizing today, with the US waging a trade war against Beijing at the same time that it has escalated the threat of the Pentagon’s offensively-oriented “AirSea Battle” strategy.
The report has just been completed by Focus on the Global South’s founder Walden Bello, who will be at SEA Junction to discuss the US’ presence in the region and launch the report. Author /Speaker Bio
Walden Bello is a Filipino academic, environmentalist, and social worker who was professor of sociology and public administration at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He cofounded Focus on the Global South in 1995 with UNDP Senior Advisor Kamal Malhotra and currently is its co-chair. He also sits on the board of directors of the International Forum on Globalization and on the board of directors of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, and is also a member of the regional Greenpeace. Until recently, he was a representative to Congress in the Republic of the Philippines. A 2003 recipient of the prestigious Right Livelihood Award (the “Alternative Nobel Prize”), Walden is viewed as a leading anti-globalization thinker in Asia. A human rights activist since the Marcos era, he is currently active in opposing the anti-human rights policies of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte (see further https://www.waldenbello.org/about-walden/).
