COVID-19 has proven to be much more than a health crisis: it has rattled the global order and highlighted the precarious architecture of unbalanced social, political, economic, and environmental systems. This book, edited by Rosalia Sciortino, presents research findings on the social protection response to the COVID-19 pandemic in six Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Narrating the unfolding economic impact of the pandemic, thus highlighting the paradox of social protection as the most socially deprived still remain the least socially protected group amid the major health crisis.
Rosalia Sciortino holds professorships in social sciences and international development at Mahidol and Chulalongkorn Universities, she is the Founder and Executive Director of SEA Junction, a Southeast Asia-Focused foundation. Previously, she served as regional director for Southeast Asia at the International Development Research Centre and the Rockefeller Foundation and officer for the Ford Foundation in Indonesia and the Philippines.
