On August 18, 2023, at SEA JUNCTION, Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, the Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR) at Mahidol University, in collaboration with civil society groups SEA JUNCTION and the MIGRANT WORKING GROUP, organised a press conference titled: “Policy Recommendation Forum on Inbound Labour Migration and Immigration in Thailand (Reforming the Replacement Migration Policy)”.
A reasonable objective would involve setting a monthly target for the integration of 20,000 existing immigrant children and adults who aspire to become part of the country, with a goal of admitting 200,000 new immigrants annually until Thailand’s population stabilises. The establishment of pathways that facilitate both professionals and hard-working, low-wage migrant workers to attain citizenship and permanent residency is of paramount importance. This reflects Thailand’s evolving multicultural reality. It is imperative that we adopt long-term immigration and integration policies.
