The 5th International Seminar on Nusantara Heritage “From Nusantara Heritage Toward South East Asia Heritage”
4 October, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 5 October, 2016 @ 5:00 pm
Background
There are crucial shifts in positioning Asia, including Southeast Asia, both geopolitically and economically in the global context. Consequently, Asia has been put in the center of various studies and research. In this context, we are interested to bring the issue of Nusantara heritage to be discussed and elaborated in academic discussions. Nusantara which literally means ‘archipelago’, is a term used for various cultural forms, which has the same cultural root i.e. the Malay culture. It refers to wide range of Malay cultural heritage, which mostly includes variety of culture in what we currently call Southeast Asia. It has unique characteristics as it is a culturally very homogeneous region yet a paradise of cultural and ethnic diversity (Simon 1995).
Performing arts and other cultural forms in South East Asia in their broader context have been a very long history of interaction, syncretisation, and acculturation. Therefore, it is important to discuss and elaborate these different cultural forms and values in their broad context to build further understanding and intercultural dialog between people living in those countries. It would be the very benefit for sharing knowledge, new perspectives, new approaches and paradigms, and the development of the performing arts and cultures among scholars in Southeast Asia to strengthen our positions in the world.
Thus, bringing the values of Nusantara heritage to Southeast Asia heritage is an important issue that could bring together scholars in the areas to explore and to develop various methods and perspectives. The seminar is the 5th international seminar on Nusantara Heritage in which ISBI Bandung has been chosen as a host for this year. Universitas Malasyia Sabah, Unes Semarang, ITB Bandung and Sultan Idris Education University Malasyia have hosted the seminar from the first to the fourth respectively. Each seminar has its own focus and uniqueness related to the issue of Nusantara heritage.
And this year, ISBI Bandung emphasizes on bringing the values of Nusantara heritage to the broader context of Southeast Asia heritage. The seminar is designed to provide an opportunity for Indonesian and other scholars and professionals across disciplines to present their innovative research projects in the fields of performing arts, visual designs, media and technology, and beyond. The seminar offers a wide range of topics and activities include academic presentations, art exhibitions, as well as performing art collaborations.
