Addressing the Causes of Thailand’s Largest Invisible Killer: Air Pollution
4 August, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Air pollution in Thailand ranks amongst the worst in the world, accounting for over 32,200 premature deaths in 2019 and reducing average life expectancy by 2 years. In this seminar, we examine the three major sources of air pollution in Thailand: vehicular emissions, agricultural emissions and industrial emissions. Our analysis also examines the effects of Thailand’s emissions on, and responses from, its neighbours. Thailand’s incomplete decentralization, administrative fragmentation, prioritisation of economic growth and protection of vested business interests have created numerous barriers to improve the governance of the air. New legislation is needed to overcome these barriers and protect socio-economically marginalised citizens who are disproportionately vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollution.
The seminar will be held on 4 August 2022, 5.00-6.30 pm at SEA Junction.
