Book Discussion – Tai Magic by Susan Conway

February 21 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

On 21 February 2026 at 5-6.30 pm SEA Junction with support from the John F. Kennedy Foundation of Thailand is holding a public discussion of the newly revised book Tai Magic written by Susan Conway and published by Silkworm Books.

Drawing on four years of extensive fieldwork in the Shan States and northern Thailand, Susan Conway provides a colorful picture of the people who create magic and explains how mystical remedies are prescribed and the rituals involved.

This new edition of Tai Magic is richly illustrated and introduces manuscripts, textiles, and talismans connected to the supernatural world from museum collections in the USA, UK and Thailand. Framed within Tai cosmology and numerology, as well as Theravada Buddhism and spirit beliefs, the book explores how benevolent and malevolent spirits are depicted in figurative imagery, and how sacred diagrams and incantations are crafted to confer protection, invite good fortune, or inflict misfortune.

The event will be conducted in English and broadcast on our fb page @SEA-Junction. SEA Junction director, Rosalia Sciortino, will facilitate the discussion.
