Call for Expression of Interest: Forum Theatre (FT) Training of Trainer
10 March, 2020
Background
Theatre is a form of knowledge: it should and can also be a means of transforming society. Theatre can help us build our future, rather thank just waiting for it’ (Augosto Boal: Brazilian theatre activist).
Forum Theatre originates from South American in the 1979s and has worldwide recognition for promoting and facilitating community led consultation, mobilization and bottom-up response/solutions for change. Its practice has led to qualitative improvements in community consultation and application to different ‘communities’ e.g. government officials, institutes for different purpose including ‘Legislative Theatre’ in Afghanistan, and interactive theatre via the internet with participation through mobile phones.
Oxfam Mekong Regional Water Governance Program (MRWGP) 2020-2024 works in a way which is transboundary, inclusive in its decision making, empowering of women, based on evidence-based dialogue, promoting rights and responsibilities, and promoting the power of the people most affected by water governance decisions. It does this by operating in partnership to create networks of actors, across 5 strategic priorities:
- Inclusion
- Gender Equality and Women Leadership
- Civil Society Engagement and Networking
- Communities and CBNRM
- Hydropower and Sustainable Energy
Since 2015 Oxfam has facilitated groups to work with Forum Theatre techniques in the Mekong region. Training and performances have been held with a range of stakeholders in Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and now it is planned in Cambodia. As a result of being introduced to this methodology, many partners have asked to better understand the techniques of facilitation, so they are able to run sessions themselves. In response to this request, Oxfam has initiated a regional training program for 8 young people competitively selected from the region to be trained in the techniques which first TOT training organize in 2015.
After the training for facilitators Mekong Water Governance Program has supported those jokers to organize/applied this technique in their countries those including Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. Through 5 joker trainings, The jokers in the region were able to facilitate more Forum Theatres and brough in this creative and influence technique to help communities understand their own development and issue and they also applied this technique to communicate their influencing message, issue and solution.
This year, Oxfam will host a Forum Theatre (FT) training of trainers (ToT) in Mekong countries led by professional experiences joker. Oxfam will offer our alumni and partners the opportunity to attend a training of trainer (ToT) trained by the International Joker Trainer on Forum Theatre, together with selected Mekong jokers. The facilitator will train participants on how to use Forum Theatre to promote interaction with audiences, so that audiences are involved in creating solutions to the challenges presented on stage.
