Filipino Women Migrating for Work to Europe

This online event will focus on Filipino women’s migration to Europe and be held on 20 April 2023 at 4.00-5.30 pm (Bangkok Time) on Zoom (Link: http://bit.ly/SEA-EUROPE-MIGRATION) and Facebook Live: SEA-Junction and GAATW page.
Focus is on social integration in two European countries with significant Philippine migrant population. Krisanta Caguioa-Mönnich, a language and cultural mediator at Ban Ying, will discuss the situation in Germany, while Marissa Begonia, Director at The Voice of Domestic Workers, will talk about Britain, while (for bios and organizations profiles see below. A Q & A session will follow moderated by Rosalia Sciortino, Founding Director of SEA Junction.
This event is part of a series of six-monthly webinars with the title “Towards Safe Southeast Asia-Europe Migration Corridors”, which SEA Junction and the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW) are organizing. The series is meant as a knowledge sharing and evidence-based advocacy for socio-economic inclusion of migrant and trafficked women from Southeast Asia to Europe: both those who currently live in Europe and those who have returned to their home countries. To achieve the objective of promoting rights-affirming labour migration policies and anti-trafficking measures on these migration routes.
In the first event, Maruja M.B. Asis, Director of Research and Publications at the Scalabrini Migration Center gave an overview of migration from Southeast Asia and, in the second and third event, provided an overview of Vietnamese women migrating for work overseas. In particular, Khuat Thu Hong, Nguyen Song Bao Anh, Ha Hoang Yen of the Institute for Social Development Studies (ISDS) presented the departure country perspectives, while Mariko Hayashi and Joanna Garnier respectively discussed the destination country perspectives. Two events of the Philippines are planned of which this one is the first one.

Krisanta Caguioa-Mönnich
Krisanta is a language and cultural mediator at Ban Ying, a GAATW member. She is a Filipina social worker specializing in cases of human trafficking and violence against women.
Ban Ying is a specialised counselling centre which works to combat human trafficking.
The aim of Ban Ying’s work is to improve the living conditions and social and legal situation of migrant women in Germany. In order to achieve this, the organisation’s work does not just focus upon migrant women affected by violence, but also upon their environment and the wider public sphere. Ban Ying offers advice and counselling services to migrant women and transgender individuals in Berlin and other parts of Germany.
Marissa Begonia
Marissa is the Director at The Voice of Domestic Workers. She is the author of the award-winning story ‘Cry of a Migrant’ which led to the formation of Justice for Domestic Workers now known as The Voice of Domestic Workers.
The Voice of Domestic Workers is an education and support group calling for justice and rights for Britain’s sixteen thousand migrant domestic workers. They provide educational and community activities for domestic workers – including English language lessons, drama, art classes, and employment advice, and provide support for domestic workers who exit from abusive employers. They work towards the empowerment of migrant domestic workers to stand up and voice their opposition to any discrimination, inequality, slavery, and all forms of abuse. More information here.
