Globalization and Democracy in Southeast Asia : Challenges, Responses and Alternative Futures
Over the past decade, Southeast Asia has undergone socio-economic and political changes. The region is painted with contradictions of political realities, including astonishing political reform, weakening oppositions, democratic impasses, and puzzled democratic reversals. This volume updates the social and political situations and debates in Southeast Asia as it is entering the 21st century. Scholars provide analysis of their country-specific situations and re-interpretations of their version of democracy.
Why are Southeast Asian nation states struggling to adopt full-fledged liberal democracy? Are they developing alternative political systems and models of governance? What do oppositional movements have to offer? Where is Southeast Asian politics headed to in the twenty-first century?
The book to be launched at SEA Junction on 13 October 2013 at 2 PM deals with these questions in order to better understand the relationship between globalization and models of democracy. It highlights factors which have impacted the different regional and national paths taken such as: the legacy of the Cold War, rapid economic development and liberalization, external economic globalization, the important role of informal politics, powerful elites, and weak but emerging middle classes.
