Myanmar in Crisis: Protecting and Supporting Communities – Presentation of OHCHR Report on the Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar

July 7 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Event Background

Five years after the military coup, Myanmar’s people continue to endure a profound humanitarian and human rights crisis marked by ongoing violence, displacement, and severe restrictions on access to essential services. Yet amid these challenges, local communities, civil society organizations, and pro-democracy actors have developed innovative mechanisms to protect civilians, provide humanitarian assistance, and build inclusive governance structures in areas beyond military control. A new report by the UN Human Rights Office examines these locally driven efforts and their potential contributions to human rights protection and future transitional justice in Myanmar. At the same time, it warns that declining international attention and funding, coupled with the continued transfer of arms and other resources to the military, risk undermining these fragile initiatives. The report calls for renewed international engagement to support local protection efforts and prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian and human rights situation.

Join us at SEA Junction on 7th July 2026 from 5.30 – 7.00 pm for a presentation by James Rodehaver, Chief of the Myanmar Team at the UN Human Rights Office, on the findings of the newly released report on Situation of Human Rights in Myanmar: Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The session will examine the human rights situation in Myanmar and the consequences of declining international support for civilian protection efforts follows by a Q&A. Event will be held in English and livestream on SEA-Junction Facebook page.
