Brief Discussion
One Myanmar consisted of two complimentary events focusing on diversity in contemporary Myanmar that were held on 17 and 18 December 2016. The first event in the afternoon of 17 December was the documentary screening of “Sound of Silence” by Thet Oo Maung. The film’s storyline follows former Tatmadaw soldier Saw Aye Thein as adjusts to life after losing both his legs to a landmine and is a poignant meditation on the experiences of people with disabilities in Myanmar and the futility of civil war. The second event in the morning of 18 December presented a transmedia effort entitled “One Myanmar” to depict national diversity in its broad sense.
The panel speakers include:
- Thin Thin Aung, Director of Mizzima, an independent media organisation on Myanmar, playing a vital role in building democracy and informing citizens.
- Carine Jaquet, an independent researcher on social and political issues in Myanmar since 2005 and initiator of the One Myanmar Project and author of the political essays and the writings of the photo book.
- Thet Oo Maung, a well known photographer and video documentarist based in Yangon who participated in the One Myanmar effort.
