Dear Partners and Friends of SEA Junction,
Every year concerned people unite in the Sixteen Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (25 November – 10 December). At SEA Junction, we are well aware of the importance of this commitment and also this month we highlight gender issues. In particular, we will hold a series of panels featuring women artists from eight Asian countries as part of the Baturu Cultural Festival and a short film screening and panel dedicated to strategies to halt violence against migrant women in Southeast Asia.
The continued struggle against authoritarianism and impunity is another theme of this month’s activities including a film on Indonesians forced into exile by the military take-over of President Suharto as well as portraits of democracy activists in Myanmar as part of BACC Pop-Up exhibition series.
As part of our routine activities, the urgency of addressing environmental issues will be highlighted again in the Dialogue Forum panel on the Post COP29 by Bangkok Tribune News (in Thai). As usual, we will also hold our Southeast Asia Mini Book and Craft Fair, with some special offers to celebrate the festivities.
With the end of the year fast approaching, in the spirit of solidarity, we like to ask you to support our efforts to expand civic space in Southeast Asia. To donate is easy. You can: transfer via bank to our dedicated account for our Foundation for Southeast Asia Studies TMB #043 -7-18114-2 or if in Thailand you can just scan our QR code below. If in the US you can make tax-free donations through Partners Asia not forgetting to state that it is for us (just click here)!
I also take this occasion to thank all our participants, partners, and friends for your support throughout the year and wish you all the best of luck in the New Year!

Indonesian renown filmmaker Lola Amaria’s latest documentary “Eksil” (The exiles) exposes one of the darkest chapters of Indonesian history: the 1965-1966 anti-Communist crackdown following the military take-over of President Suharto caused the death of an estimated one million people. Indonesian service bond students (MAHID) sent to study abroad by the deposed former President Sukarno and its Cabinet, of which the Indonesian Communist Party (Partai Komunis Indonesia or PKI) was part, also became unexpected victims as they were barred from returning to their homeland, left stranded overseas. At the screening, the director Lola Amaria will be present to introduce the documentary and interact with the public at the Q & A session.

Organized and curated by SEA Junction in collaboration with BACC Pop-Up, the exhibition “Power of Youth & Symbols of Presence: Myanmar’s Spring Revolution Lives On” consists of two series of artworks by two Myanmar photographers, documentary photographer Ta Mwe (pseudonym) and art photography artist Lily. Lily’s “Forever Young” twin series of photo-collage portraits of Gen Z protesters is dedicated to Myanmar’s forgotten youths. Their lives and dreams have been shattered but they remain extraordinarily dedicated and committed to saving their country from military dictatorship. In parallel, Ta Mwe, in his photo documentary series “Symbols of Presence” (originally titled as “Flowers of Spring”), highlights how protesters manifest their commitment to freedom and democracy through body art amidst a backdrop of the military crackdown on protests and suppression of free speech portray.
