Dear Partners and Friends of SEA Junction,
This month, we are getting back into the swing of events. We continue to pay close attention to the evolving situation in Myanmar with a renewed series of #WhatsHappeninginMyanmar Bi-Weekly Updates. This time, the speaker is Debbie Stothard, an active promoter of human rights in Burma and the ASEAN region. In addition, we highlight women’s actions out on the streets of Burma since the coup d’état. Starting on the same week as 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, we will hold a photo exhibition in collaboration with the Women’s League of Burma, the Myanmar Project and AJAR.
We also keep other issues in the region in mind. The on-going COVID-19 crisis compels us to openly articulate the urgency of social scientists’ contribution as part of a comprehensive narrative and effective response to this pandemic. There will be two events on social sciences and COVID-19 in Thailand and in our region respectively: the first blended event in Thai and the second online event in English. Both panels are part of an IDRC-funded research project co-led by ARC-UI and GDN, of which SEA Junction was part. Meanwhile, as the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) is taking place, we will carry on with our monthly environmental forum in Thai with Bangkok Tribune News to discuss the implications for Thailand and other countries.
More information of each event can be found below, where you can also read about our special initiatives. The call under “From Fear to Resilience: Visual Storytelling of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia” remains open to engage the public in sharing tales of strength and humanity and promote an alternative narrative of the pandemic. The supported activities under our small grant program have also been on-going, with communities finding ways to cope and help others in the pandemic. Next month, we will call for contributions to the program as well as announce the third round.
We hope you will continue to find our program of interest. We count on your participation and help in sharing the information about our events with your network. And, if you would like to support us, please click on the donation box below as it will help us navigate these uncertain times.
Thank you and best regards,

Dialogue Forum 5 (Year 2)
“From Paris to Glasgow, the Climate Turning Point?”
10 November 2021, 07:00 pm – 08:00 pm
The IPCC report has painted a shocking picture on the rising temperature, pointing that if nothing is done the world could pass the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold in the next 20 years. Countries are now wrangling at the ongoing UN Climate Conference or COP 26 in Glasgow, the UK and it remains to be seen what the final deal out of the Conference would be like as well as its implications for countries for years to come. Bangkok Tribune together with SEA Junction and other partners will explore this topic at the 5th online Dialogue Forum in Thai with interpretation to English provided via Zoom.

Photo Exhibition “Women Out on the Streets for a New Burma”
23 November – 5 December 2021, 10:00 am – 07:00 pm
Women have been an integral part of the protest in Burma, often being on the frontline of the movement in spite of the danger of being killed, wounded, arrested, tortured and the increased risk of sexual harassment and violence. The photo exhibition at the 1st floor BACC, organized by SEA Junction in collaboration with the Women’s League of Burma, the Myanmar Project and Asia Justice and Rights, shows how wide-spread, diverse and empowering women leadership and participation has been and continue to be in opposition to the Tatmadaw.

SPECIAL INITIATIVES
From Fear to Resilience:
Visual Storytelling of COVID-19 in Southeast Asia
With the current surges in COVID-19 infection across Southeast Asia, the fear of contracting the disease remains and is even escalated when the vaccine is in shortage and not accessible to many. Many also suffer from socio-economic hardship. At the same time, people are displaying strength in coping with the continuing uncertainties. SEA Junction invites all to make an effort to collectively provide a visual story of the pandemic in Southeast Asia that shows the worries as well as the resilience and hope in our experience. We are calling for short photo essays or illustrated art essays in any language of the region (to be later translated into English) or in English and shared on our platforms.
