“Coloring the World for Peace and Tolerance” Walk-In Children and Youth Drawing Exhibition

18 December, 2018 @ 11:00 am - 23 December, 2018 @ 7:00 pm

On 15 and 16 December 2018, a competition will be held for children and young people to draw with pastels or paint with acrylic on the theme of peace and tolerance in Southeast Asia and commemorate Human Rights Day on 10 December. The “Coloring the World for Peace and Tolerance” Walk-in Drawing Children and Youth Competition aims to promote a culture of peace and tolerance by fostering awareness and appreciation of the values of diversity, fairness, equality, and human rights. As organizers, SEA Junction and the GUSDURian Thailand Network believe that art is an important medium to help us to make sense of our word and enable us to imagine the unimaginable and reflect on the challenges humanity faces. Art is essential to children and young people’s growth as it expands their horizons, fantasy and humanist skills.

The competition will be open to everybody aged between 4 and 15 years who will report (walk-in) at the Corner Space of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center between 11am and 7pm on Saturday 15 December and between 11am and 2pm on Sunday 16 December and pay the registration fee (see below). Registration in advance is recommended, but not obliged. Participants will be competing into 4 age categories of: a) 4-6 year-old; b) 7-9 year-old; c) 10-12 year-old and d) 13-15 year-old and they can use crayons or acrylic made available for all participants to draw and paint.

All drawings will be judged by a team of leading artists and human rights experts starting from 2pm on 16 December and decisions will be announced at 5pm of the same day. Each category will have 6 winners, 1st, 2nd and 3rd price and three runner-ups.
6 more prices will be given based on special considerations to be announced at a later date. In evaluating the drawings, both the artistic quality as well as the content will be assessed. The most important reward is that the winning drawings will be exposed for the entire week at the BACC where public from all over the world can admire them and provide comments. Symbolic prizes and certificates will also be given to the winners and their work promoted in the Thailand GUSDURian Network and SEA Junction website and social media.

To make the event more attractive, during the competition days an Indonesian mini-bazaar will also be held featuring Indonesian crafts, textiles, dishes, snacks and sweets. There will also be opportunities to learn to play the Angklung, a bamboo instrument, with musician Buppesanivas (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t26Pw5ujQvQ&feature=share)

The event is made possible by the Fellowship Fund of Human Rights Program of Mahidol University and private contribution. We also count on participants’ fees to cover the costs.
