Four Elements’ Jewelry: Handmade Clay Jewelry by Isaan Women of Dan Kwien
18 July, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
In times of crisis you either crumble or fight – the women of the Isaan village of Dan Kwien are not about to give up despite the hardship caused by Covid-19.
Their handmade clay necklaces, bracelets and rings are slowly building a fanbase in Thailand and overseas, centuries-old skills now using modern e-commerce to reach faraway markets and establish hope in hard times.
Join Naruemon Chaingam – a female Thai filmmaker — for a discussion and workshop on the art and culture of Isaan through her ‘Four Elements’ jewelry brand, which is made with the women of Dan Kwien, a village famous for its long history of clay pottery.
Each piece is handmade, with a unique signature design with colours drawn from the elements around them. Women using nature, community and art to ensure economic survival.
It will be a fun, positive interactive discussion – with video and live music – exploring a rare skill from northeastern Thailand. But we also want it to be a space to exchange ideas on how small businesses can flourish and ways to help women during the pandemic.
We are lucky to be joined by Tontrakul Kaewyong – a gifted musician who plays many Isaan instruments and a keeper of Isaan music traditions who will provide the soundtrack to the event with a special performance.
