[OPEN CALL] Take a Picture, Tell Your Story: A Migrant View of Thailand’s Fishing and Seafood Industry
This open call for photo stories is directed at migrants from Cambodia, Myanmar and other countries in Southeast Asia working in the fishing and seafood processing industry in Thailand. Observers and experts often report of the significant challenges faced by migrant workers in this industry due to the prevalence of exploitative working conditions and societal discrimination, but we rarely hear their voices and their stories of how they experience their migration and cope with those challenges.
This project organized by SEA Junction with support of the International Labour Organization (ILO)’s Ship to Shore Rights South East Asia initiative funded by the European Union aims to offer a platform for migrant workers to share their stories and express their perspectives both about their work and their daily lives so as to enhance the visibility and understanding of their experiences. We believe that such sharing will enhance awareness among the general public and stakeholders about the specific issues faced by migrant workers as they themselves see them and contribute to the bottom-up development of effective policies and interventions to better address their needs. Without a comprehensive understanding of migrants’ experiences and aspirations, it is challenging to create an inclusive and more equitable society that uphold everyone’s human dignity (see further https://www.ohchr.org/en/migration/reframing-narratives-migration).
To all migrants of diverse gender, ethnicity and nationality contributing to Thailand’s fishing and seafood-processing industry, we invite you to send to us your photographs taken with your mobile or other means along with stories depicting your work, daily lives, challenges, aspirations, community interactions with people in Thailand, and ongoing connection with your country of origin throughout the migration cycle (before, during and for some after migration). We hope you can capture moments before, during, and/or after work, as well as aspects of your life beyond work and accompany your photos with personal messages. You can write in English, Thai or your own language about what the photos mean to you, why you took them and what you wish to convey. Each photo story should consist of a brief intro and about 10 pictures with brief captions. When ready, please submit to our email info@seajunction.org or any of our social media platforms. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need further explanations
We will gather all the submission until 15 January 2024 and publish them with due acknowledgment (with real names, pseudonym or anonymous as indicated) on our website. Selected submissions will be showcased in an exhibition, and receive tokens of appreciation. A certificate of participation will be given to all participants.
Looking forward to receiving your photo story!
