JANUARY AGENDA
Dear Colleagues and Friends of SEA Junction,
SEA Junction was born in 2016, and as a small child is gradually learning to function and realize its mission of promoting knowledge and interaction on Southeast Asia. Thank you to all the staff, volunteers, founding partners, collaborating organizations and all those who have participated and contributed to our initial journey. Full of enthusiasm and commitment we look forward to continuing this learning process in 2017 together with you all!
In January, focus will be on Cambodian migration to Thailand and the urgency of policies more responsive to the reality of a more interconnected region and that promote decent work for all through a series of poster and photo exhibitions and panel discussions. Below, I provide the complete agenda for your consideration and also to ask your help in disseminating it among your network.
Once more thank you for being part of the SEA Junction initiative and look forward to welcoming you at our venue in the New Year!
7-8 JANUARY 2017 at 11AM-7PM: SOUTHEAST ASIA MINI BOOK FAIR
The mini book fair, held on the first working-day weekend of each month in the BACC space in front of SEA Junction, showcases a limited collection of new and used books on various aspects of Southeast Asia. This time we will also offer literature books from all over the world donated to us for this purpose. The total amount derived from the fair will be used to support SEA Junction’s activities See further: http://seajunction.org/event/southeast-asia-mini-book-fair-3/
15-22 JANUARY 2017: “PRECARIOUS MIGRATION; VOICES OF UNDOCUMENTED CAMBODIAN MIGRANTS” COMIC EXHIBITION
In June 2014 undocumented migrants were expelled from Thailand. Over the following two-week period approximately 230,000 undocumented Cambodian migrants fled and returned home. The week-long exhibition to be launched at SEA Junction on 15 January 2017 at 4-6pm shares the experience of migrants and their families during this period in comic book form produced with the Migrating out of Poverty Research Programme Consortium based at the Unversity of Sussex. A panel including speakers from Cambodia, Thailand and the Consortium explores the dynamics of Cambodian-Thai migration and its economic and social aspects. Impacts of the involuntary return on migrants and their families will also be discussed.

28 JANUARY-5 FEBRUARY 2017: PHOTO EXHIBITION ON CAMBODIAN MIGRANTS IN THE THAI FISHING INDUSTRY
In recent here, the harsh labor practices and poor living and work conditions of migrants from Cambodia and Myanmar in the fishing and seafood industry in Thailand have received international attention and prompted demands for systemic reform. Photographer Rahman Mahmud’s insights powerfully illustrate the Cambodian migrant children, women and men who sustain the industry with their exploited labor. More information to be soon added to our website.
