Dear All,

The month of June is of particular significance to SEA Junction, as we will be celebrating our first anniversary on 25 June. During the past year we have strived with you all to fulfil our mission to facilitate sharing of knowledge and experience on Southeast Asia in all its dimensions. While pleased with the results so far, we are aware that much more can be done and better. We will try to apply the lessons learned as we move forward and count on your continued support as we mature and expand our reach. To celebrate the anniversary we will hold a bazaar and other events.

I am also glad to announce that this month we will have for the first time an event focusing on Laos. Hope you come and listen to traditional Lao stories being told in English with the live musical accompaniment of the khene.

We will also hold the second event of our series “ASEAN People in Flux” in collaboration with the Heinrich Boll Stiftung Southeast Asia with a focus on medical tourism. More on these and other events can be read in this month agenda.

Looking forward to welcoming you and please help us disseminating this information to your network.

Best regards,

Lia Sciortino Sumaryono
Founder and Executive Director SEA Junction

SEEKING HEALTH ACROSS THE BORDER

The second panel of the series ASEAN People in Flux in collaboration with the Heinrich Boell Foundation will focus on Southeast Asia as a well-know medical tourism destination especially, and contrary to popular belief, for patients from within the region. Southeast Asians are travelling for healthcare because of costs, quality or simply because they have no other choices. While governments are facilitating the medical tourism industry and travel for health purposes, there are many impacts on health systems and public health that need to be better understood (More details will soon be provided on the website)

To celebrate our first year anniversary –in addition to the panel on medical tourism and a reflection for volunteers and founding partners —  we will hold a two-day bazaar. We hope to raise funds for SEA Junction by offering for sale all books, glass paintings, photos, crafts and other goods donated to SEA Junction in the course of the year for this purpose at very special minimum price.
