Consultation on Transformation of Governance

19 August, 2017 - 20 August, 2017

In the post-colonial era we live in Nation States. Some states are ruled by an elected government and enjoy comparative stability, economic growth, improved infrastructure, educational opportunities, employment and health care.

Some states are unstable due to territorial conflict, active war between the government security forces and armed insurgents resulting in deaths and strained relationships between people who support the government and those who oppose. The negative impact of such instability on the economy creates unemployment and insecurity.

What is common in both categories of states is corruption and concentration of wealth and power in a small minority of elites and power holders. Those who are in power lack accountability and transparency, though the degree may vary from one country to another. This alliance also exploits the country’s natural resource and very often transfers wealth to a safe haven in a foreign country. They take turns to rule through the so-called flawed electoral system.

Our educational institutions, academic community and civil society are too weak to challenge and they have little or no impact on the governance. Some of them become subservient to corrupt political practices.

Failed state, ineffective governance and war create challenges such as millions of refugees and migrants, that require massive humanitarian response.

Therefore there is a need for serious soul-searching and active engagement in evolving strategies including creating a new generation to reshape national and global governance towards a better future for everyone.
