On 4th February 2025 from 5.30 – 7.00 PM at our venue, room 407-8, 4th Floor, BACC, SEA Junctio hosted the opening of the Art Exhibition “What’s in A Name?” Picturesque Calligraphy which will feature the works of the well-known Indonesian artist and activist, Butet Kartaredjasa.
The exhibition, held on 14-16 February on the 3rd Floor Curve Wall, BACC, displayed more than 25 large artworks on canvas and on textile and 40 original drawings composed with a unique artistic and meditative technique consisting of repeated writing of the artist’s full name “Bambang Ekolojo Butet Kartaredjasa” as a “visual wirid” or a “litany prayer” that is given form, rather than sound. The repeated writing has led to figurative A3-sized drawings, which were then enlarged, painted and further elaborated on all kind of material including cloths, ceramic and steel (see further here).
The exhibition was officially opened by H.E. Mr. Rachmat Budiman, the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Thailand. After, the artist introduced his art and the meaning behind his work. A reception with the traditional cone-shaped nasi kuning tumpeng is essential in Javanese selamatan or celebratory communal rituals, was held after a guided tour of the exhibition.
